Other than travelpunk, of course...which websites do you go to when you want info on a newfound point of interest? The only one I know of is Lonely Planet but they only give me and very tourist-driven descriptions.

If i'm going somewhere that most ppl from tpunk wouldn't have been to I check out virtual tourist i have found some really good off the beaten path info from real people, especially for new zealand!

Because destinations and desired activities can vary so much, I find it's impossible to get all the info you need from just one or two sources. So, I generally use travelpunk and LP as a starting point, then I google the hell out of any places of interest.

My travel style is completely different now. Honestly I barely do any pre trip planning anymore. I buy a Lonely Planet book beforehand and read it once Im in the country. The best source of info is asking the backpackers that you meet along the way.
