Default Need help travelling to Morocco

Hey i was planning on travelling to Morocco and I realize the CDC recommends certain vaccines but.....

Has anyone travelled to Morocco and not done this? I am wondering do I really need any vaccines or Malaria medications? I am planning on going to Fez, Marrakesh and Casablanca and maybe elsewhere. I do not plan on drinking the water so am I ok?

Vaccines and malaria meds are almost always an individual choice (outside of some very high-risk regions). At the minimum you'll probably want to have a tetanus booster if you haven't had one in 10 years, but besides that it's up in the air. The travel.state.gov website tends to take a VERY paranoid view when they make their travel recommedations.

I've traveled to India several times and aside from the first trip I haven't taken any malaria medication, instead relying upon bug juice and covering up. The risk of malaria is probably lower in Morocco than (most of) India due to the more arid climate, but as I said before, it's a personal choice and I am in no way recommending that you don't need to take the meds. I weighed the pros and cons and made my decision based on that.

I hope this helps.

Considering Morocco is turning into quite a holiday destination in Europe, with all-inclusives, etc, it is probably a safe place. I've had a couple friends (from the UK and Germany) go, and none of them got any vaccinations or were even recommended to do so. It's probably another way for doc's to make money in the states cause I don't know if Bluecross/blueshield covers malaria pills!

The trip to Morocco from the Canaries is something that will jump in your face once you run into the first person giving you a leaflet with tours. It's nothing that anyone books in advance. It's a simple day trip as would be a bus tour.

In general Morocco is an extremely safe and hospitable country. Marrakech is a wonderful city with a lot to offer the traveller. My advice if you are alone is to hire a guide for the day. This way you will get to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Of course, they will take you to shops where they get a commission but everyone is entitled to make a little bit aren't they.
