Default long time traveler, first time backpacker

posted this on accident in wrong forum..
hey gang,
so my situation is this. i've worked for bands the last few years and have been all over the world on tour. while i would consider myself well traveled, i have no experience with backpacking or traveling on a budget since the band pays for just about everything. my 24th birthday is coming up and i would like to treat myself to a european trip come end of january/beginning of march for a few weeks. my question is this...
i'm not too sure on where exactly it is i'd like to go. does anyone have any recommendations for affordable, yet worthwhile cities for me to visit? about me: i'm 23, work in entertainment, live in chicago, tattoos, not a big booze drinker but i love coffee shops and enjoy smoking from time to time. i'd like to try and not make this a shopping excursion and stick to seeing and experiencing the places i travel to. any tips for where i should fly into? inexpensive cities that have a lot to offer? right now i'm considering paris, venice, amsterdam, and glasgow. tentative travel dates are 1/26 - 2/16 +/- a couple days. my birthday is 1/28...any recommendations? thanks everyone!

Welcome to the boards. First off, its gonna be quite chilly that time of year, but if your not bothered by that, go for it! You can never go wrong in Northern EU, although its a bit more expensive than say Eastern EU.... Kinda comes down to whats really interesting to you...

Hey bud, Welcome aboard!

Amsterdam is on your list and from your interests is a must see. I would certainly spend some time in that city, but I would suggest hitting the surrounding cities too. They are less expensive, just as Dutch, and still can offer that wilder side. I have had good luck finding flights direct into schiphol airport there as well.

Your going to love it. It's such a different travel experience when your really 'out there' in the world. So free. I've done it to Belize/Mexico. One of my best trips yet!

Congrats! European trip this time of year. Your brave. Best of Luck.
I haven't done a European back packing trip ... but I see it in my future. I would love it if you'd update with you're travel story.
Cheers. Marie
