I had only just finished planning my longest, and first trip to Europe minus the fam, had just bought my plane ticket home from Madrid when the bombing happened...and now I am dreading that worrying about something like this will ruin my trip...I realize that these things can happen anywhere at anytime, but still....grrr...frustrating. Is this ridiculous, or what??

Are you worried that something will happen or are you just worried that you're going to be spending a lot of time and energy worrying about it?

You could be worried & afraid or realize that terrorism has always happened and will always happen, and there's not a lot you can do about it, so just continue on your way doing your own thing. That's how I feel, but I do understand your concern. I say go for it anyway!!! B) Good luck!

LOL, Its funny that your concerned about bombings in Spain, and I am trying to find a way into Iraq...

Anyway...Spain has been dealing with bombings for sometime now, there are separatist movements in Spain for many years...I would not let a terrible thing like that prevent you from going anywhere you wanna go. To keep it perspective, My cousin is a school teacher and on the afternoon of the Madrid bombing him and 30 students were flying into Madrid. The school did not cancel their trip, nor did any of the parents pull their kids out of the group going...Millions of people visit Spain every year, and they all make it home fine...the odds are in your favor...Go my friend and enjoy what Spain has to offer!!

Worrying and fear are what the terrorists want. That is how they win. I say "F*ck you Terrorists!" I will continue to live my life how I see fit. If I want to travel to different countries, if I want to go the top of tall buildings, fly in planes, take trains, etc. I will. My response to their actions is my peaceful action of continuing to live my way. If they choose to commit an act somewhere that will cause my demise, so be it. I'll become a restless soul and haunt them for eternity.

I love life, and enjoy doing things, but I will not give up my freedom to 'feel' safe in response to such cowardly acts.

We went to Spain (brief stop in Madrid either way) for Easter. After both the Madrid bombings and the discovery of the bomb on the train track to Seville (which was along our way). Mother-in-law couldn't understand that we would endanger the lives of four of her grandchildren, but we just asked her what she was thinking, risking her life driving from Texas to Kansas! We even rode the Madrid metro (and a local did thank us for our vote of confidence!), and survived just fine. It's a fabulous system, much better than when we were there 13 years ago. We lived a mile from the Pentagon and took the Metro into DC every day in 2002, we went to NYC during a Code Orange, and stood at the bus stop in plain view during the three week sniper scare - with our three kids. Opening your eyes in the morning is a risk, and if you drive to work you're risking your life way more than getting on a plane to Madrid or even the Middle East.

Having said that, I have a personal policy of staying out of active war zones. It kept me out of Yugoslavia and Israel in 1991. Canadian Dude - watch yourself in Iraq! My husband flew Op Southern Watch there, and got shot at every day. They missed, but they tried hard. There are a lot of weapons floating around, and a lot of unhappy people with grudges! Don't want to see you on Al Jazeera...

Well said, Tumbleweedz!

I know I've said it before on the Boards, but you do a far more dangerous thing cancelling a trip, and driving on the freeways of your home town, than you do visiting 90% of the countries of the world.

One of these days, Tumbleweedz, I'm going to have to meet up with you and your husband and sit around and swap stories into the night...

I was in India when they had a riot down the road and threw pertrol bombs everywhere, you just learn where not to go. You'll be fine in Spain. You could get bombed anywhere. I can't avoid London because it's a prime target for terrorist activites.

Any time you're in Vilnius, wwm!

Space Virgin - we were down south, near Cadiz, but the following week. A couple of days on the beach is a great cure for six months of Lithuanian winter...ahhh. Our littlest discovered the unlimited joy of sand. Can anyone beat this? She'd been in 9 countries by the time she was 11 months old. It's a record for our family.
