Take Sandals
Hey yo,
heading out on a 4-5 month ish Europe trip in two weeks. Should I bring my Merrel Sandals along? They are fairly bulky, but I was thinking I could lash them to the outside of my pack.
Any opinions?

For sure, I wore mine most of the time. Saves having to wash socks.

Even when I was freezing in Israel/Jordan, I STILL lived in my flip flops because my feet were worn out hunks of leather after all the hiking. But I also didn't want to be barefoot in the hostel or the marketplace in the morning or evening.
So worth it!

Wow crazy response. So are you guys saying thong sandals or regular sandals? Because I cannot stand thong sandals!!! But they are so much easier to pack...

it's really personal preference. although if you're going to be any sort of hiking or really off the beaten path towns, trekking sandals would definitely be better. i just find flip flops to be much more free and comfortable.

In theory I am against "mandals," but because I know Anna Wintour is not going to personally slough the callouses off your feet at the end of a long day of sight-seeing in "pretty" shoes, I give them a pass for functionality while people are traveling.
If I were doing something like hiking around streams or super hot light hiking or woodsy stuff, I might want a few more straps on my sandals - including the velcro teva-esque styles. Even - gasp - keens! But I haven't been presented with that opportunity so I'm a flip flop girl. I've also only really done dusty hiking (read, rocks in sandals of ANY kind) or jungly stuff where I get grossed out about what kind of slithery somebodies could crawl over my exposed toes. So I bring flip flops for casual stuff, and hiking trainers for actual physical stuff. Plus, you want a smaller flip flop for the shower anyway as the strappy fabric ones retain the wetness.
I think the bottom line is you want your toes to be free!!!! Why free yourself from the shackles of a day job (if only momentarily) only to confine your toesies? And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, I say YES to sandals. (I feel so campaigny---ooooh DC in a pres-election year!)

PS: My sandals smell like jungle.
How can I fix this?

Stop smelling your feet! JK, soak em in bleach + water or run em through the washing machine (not dryer).
Or just wait for your body to START smelling like jungle then all will be right with the world.

Alright cool, but Sandals and my shoes will take up a lot of room! Should I just tie these things to the outside of my ruck?
thx

Wont you be wearing your shoes? You can then tie your sandals to your pack or whatever.
