Default 30 Overrated Destinations

Here is the link:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel...0.photogallery

I felt like I needed to post about this. I've briefly read every entry. Why does everyone bitch about... Everything? People are bitching about the weather, as if it's a secret that Seattle is grey, Bali is humid and full of mosquitos, and Wales is rainy. Really? I could've told you that about all three, and I haven't been to any of these.

I even saw one person bitch about the BEACH? Yeah well I was in Wisconsin this past weekend and it was 3 degrees. If people did research, they would realize there are far better options than public beaches. Shit my moms family owns a condo in Naples, it has a private beach but is accessible by the public... How hard is it to walk a bit?

Honestly if I had the money to travel to all of these destinations, you wouldn't hear me bitch once. Unless its to Venice, that place sucks, end of story.

Number 19 :
Any place that's not Los Angeles

I'm sure this person has traveled a lot... L.A. is certainly great, but... let's say we have a different mindset.

This article made me laugh... Austin? Sacramento? Santa Fe? LOL! I'm sorry, when I plan a trip I don't consider any of those places and I'm sure people who visit America from out of the country don't either... WTF!

Laguna Beach? That place was never fucking cool in the first place til there was a reality show, and the reality show was lame too!

Las Vegas? Whoever said that needs to wash their mouth out with soap. What, it was bright with weird tourists and you spend a lot of money? Well no shit. Look at all the freaking hotels, eat out at one of the MANY amazing restaurants, see a Cirque du Soleil show, go to the Spa at Caesar's Palace... shit!

"Any Place That's Not Los Angeles"? ARE YOU SERIOUS?

WASHINGTON DC? Shut the fuck up. Now they've gone and offended me. How can you hate DC? I could go to DC every month, and do the SAME things and still have a great time.

I like how these "destinations of the world" are mostly lame cities in America that only Americans travel too because they're to good to travel abroad.

This is prolly why the Trib filed bankrupcy.

Yeah seriously why were these so many American cities on there?

Anyway the most overrated place is ROME!

If you had told me this a year ago, I would have said you were crazy. Now I just disagree. The eternal city is a special place but I can see that it would be unattractive teeming with tourists in the middle of summer.

Plus the best gelato of my life was there! Gelateria di Santa Maria Maggiore next to the monument/cathedral if anyone is interested...

Maybe we could start our own thread "most overrated cities" and let the discussions flow... I believe, having been on these boards for over 5 years now, that Venise and Paris would be top of the our list. Spontaneously, I'd say mine is London.

I'm also convinced that there'd be less cities from the States on our list.

The Wales one really bugged me. Seemed most of their ire came from the house their friends let them stay in, because it wasn't kid-proofed. AS IF WALES SHOULD HAVE PREPARED FOR THEIR KIDS' ARRIVAL. And honestly if I was a pub owner I'd make them leave the double stroller somewhere else too, I friggin' hate those things.

Jesus christ on a crutch.

Seriously the people who wrote those articles are probably the lamest travellers alive. They should probably stick to 5-star resorts and cruises.

OH MY GOD... the person who said 'anywhere but LA'?... "travel time - you're already here" - ummm, I'm not, and neither is... hmmm... most of the world's population!
my overrated place would probably be Milan, but it's not like I had an awful time there... I just thought it wasnt as nice as other italian cities.

also, Paris is a third world country????!! I mean, firstly its not a country, and secondly, that guy should go stay in a real third world country then see how he feels about Paris...

Of course that there were so few cities outside the US that were on the list should either be taken as a sign that the travelers don't leave our borders or that they do and were impressed by places like London, Venice, Paris etc.

In all fairness, we're all backpackers here. We've stayed in mediocre to bad accommodations on many occasions. We're use to any and all types of weather. Some people expect places to be sunny and warm, and have nothing go wrong, no matter where they go, and what time of year.

Glad to see you all feel the same way that I do about this article. Honestly the only reason I posted it was because it was pissing me off.

Sacramento/Sante Fe... Yeah who would go here, when you have San Francisco or Albuquerque nearby. Austin? I can't tell you the times a friend of mine posts on facebook with stuff he's doing in Austin, and I am super jealous of. Seeing movie premiers, concerts, festivals... I've slowly warmed up to the idea of moving to Austin as a possibility.

This is especially nonsensical when it was published in the Chicago Tribune. Chicago is like 2000 miles from LA. This was originally an LA Times feature surveying LA readers, but then they syndicated it.

This seems like a reflection of the self-absorbed LA attitude. Maybe it isn't a stereotype!

jeeez I just read the comment on Bali and I had enough!

the person left their door open a crack and was SHOCKED to find out that there were bus everywhere. Seriously? In a hot tropical climate you don't expect to find bugs? Let's think about this for a second....

then they were surprised to find poverty outside of their hotel...."they've been all over the world and this was the worst spot". I guess hotels that clean up the area just around where the rich tourists come are actually tricking people. I always thought it was funny how they did that in Africa....but some people actually never see the real country they've visited I suppose...

My most over rated city would either be Paris or Amsterdam. But, much as I think its over rated, saying Paris is 3rd is going way too far to the point of it being insulting to those who have been to or live in 3rd world countries.
Paris is not 3rd world just, in my opinion over rated.
As for "North Wales" they essentially judged an entire region on 1 house and a few tea shops. Now, while I admit to liking southern Wales better than northern Wales I think its silly to make outragous statements like "hard to like the Welsh at that point."

Lol, ya on my last trip I stayed in a hotel for the last night, it was pretty basic but having a room to myself felt like luxury.

My most over rated city would have to be Dublin. I hate the place and avoid it at all cost. Don't worry Dharma, it's a slightly irrational hatred but it's one that's shared by most Irish outside the pale (Dublin).
