Well for starters you've already found the best travel website around. Make sure you read lots of posts and gain as much knowledge as you can.

What sort of things are you interested in? History? Art? Hiking? Partying?

I'm sure there will be plenty of members around to help you out.

Welcome to TPunk!!

Hello and welcome aboard !

Backpacking in your 50ies, that is wonderful and you should get a lot of attention throughout your journey ! I started backpacking at 30 something and travelled since then for months at a time, in about 15 countries. I remember meeting a 65-year-old "young retired teacher" cycling around Romania for two months. Fantastic woman!

In order to help you, we would need a more detailed description of your project : duration, budget, and as mentioned your interests and goals.

The countries you are visiting are well set up for travellers of all ages, and most hostels no longer have age limits. You might want to check the hostel reviews since some cater to the party crowd, while others are quieter. In Germany, there are a series of brochures for bike travellers which list local bed and breakfasts which can often be as cheap as hostels for a couple, but offer more amenities and great food. Along the Rhein and its tributaries (esp. the winelands of the Mosel) the trains run to many of these smaller towns, so it's easy to get to a lot of the recommended guest houses, even if you're not on a bike.

Luxembourg doesn't have a great rail service outside of a couple of the main towns - a lot of attractions are only accessible by bus or private transport. We lived about 45 minutes from Luxembourg City by car, but to get there by train took 3 hours. Thomas Cook publish an excellent European timetable which shows maps and lists all the routes, or the German rail website has train info for most European trains at www.diebahn.com.
