Default need some help with logistics

hey everyone.

here's the deal. a few of my friends are going to a festival in sweden from august 12-17th. since i'm sitting home unemployed with money to burn, i figured i'd do something spontaneous and turn it into something bigger, head there a month or two before and then stay after until my money's gone. basically i want to start out in southeastern europe, i'm thinking start in istanbul or greece, and then make my way north through eastern europe and scandanavia before hopping a boat from helsinki to stockholm.

my question is, if i want to visit both greece and istanbul before heading north, which would be the better place to start? i've noticed the train from athens to istanbul is 24 hours, is there a boat or a cheap airline that has service between the two?

There should be airlines fo sho...from my experience with ferries in Greece, the bus is surprisingly actually probably faster...

thanks. i've been looking around and there are ferries that go from the greek islands to turkey, pretty reasonable averaging around $30usd with the trip being around 2-3 hours. has anyone ever taken one of them?

if it seems like too much of a hassle, i may just do one or the other before heading north. i'd love to do both but not if it doesn't make sense due to cost/time.
