Default carry on bags

i'm going to buy a new backpack before my trip in july and i was wondering what is the largest size generally allowed to be carried on airlines? i had a huge backpack last time that i had to check and i don't want to deal with that hassle again.

I'm flying US Airways in 2 weeks and I'm planning on carrying my bag on. I have a 35 L bag, but some bags are measured differently. US Airways allows dimensions up to 11x14x26 inches on their regular flights and 19x15x11 inches for their express flights. I think my bag will just barely fit on the express flight or I might have to check it at the gate since it measures about 21 inches tall. Check the website of the airline you'll be flying with.

I always get my 40L onboard. I never take it off my back when checking in, and when asked, I just make small talk about how I'm going to be living out of just this bag for the next month etc..... Most ticket agents should be cool, just don't offer the bag up right off the bat, ya know.... Good luck!

The first time I flew with my big backpack, I was flying Czech Air and those overheads were DEEP. Aka it fit in the overhead vertically/hot dog style.

And I was spoiled, and started bringing it as my carry on every time. I have NEVER been rejected, however, I have had to "valet check" it ever since. Which means the attendants will steal it from you, hustle it either underneath or in a closet (I guess - dunno planes) up front, and you get it as soon as you deboard. The only time I've ever checked it at check-in was last trip when I had a 20 hour layover on my first leg and wanted to "esplore" without a big freaking day pack on.
