Well, if you're into history at all, you could check out Ravenna. For a century or so, it was the defacto capital of the western Roman empire (at the time the empire was crumbling). When the eastern Romans reconquered Italy from the Goths, they built lots of churches in the city. And even more impressive, the mosaics that decorated those churches are STILL there. It is really cool to look up at a round, mosaic ceiling and know that it was done 1500 years ago.
Theodric's tomb is there, too. He was the long-lived king of the Goths that ruled over Italy for generations after they pulled down the Roman empire. And if I remember correctly, some of Ravenna's walls are still extant.
