Skybus
Not sure if everyone has heard, but there is a new U.S. low cost carrier using Columbus, OH as its hub. The airline is called Skybus and they are modeling themselves after Ryanair and some of the other European low cost carriers. They offer 10 seats on every flight for $10. The rest of their flights are reasonably priced as well, depending on day of travel. They have a nice little calendar on their site that shows the cheapest ticket price available for every day of the month. They tend to fly into smaller airports. I flew them today from NH to Columbus direct. As some of you know I have been working out in Ohio lately and I got sick of the typical commuter planes after I got stuck in Philly last Friday night for 6 hours. So, I decided to give Skybus a try. The airport they use is a bit farther from my house, but it was worth it. They have all brand new planes (the Airbus 317 is what I flew on) and a Southwest style que system. You can also buy priority boarding for an extra $10 per leg. Everything is ala carte though. If you check a bag, you have to pay $25. If you want food or drink on the plane, you have to pay. All in all, though, it's not a bad deal. You can only book on-line at their website. Give them a whirl if you are flying in the U.S.: Skybus

Wow they have a flight from Bellingham, WA to Columbus! Maybe I could go to a columbus meetup one day! How do you score a $10 seat. Is it something that you have to call in because I couldn't see any online.
Thanks for the info Jamie. I love low cost airlines!
FYI- Their is a lowcoast airline flying from Vancouver to Hongkong called Oasis. www.oasishongkong.com Really cheap ass deals. It also flies from Hongkong to Gatwick.

I think the $10 seats are really tough to get. I was looking at different routes online. The farther you go out in months, the cheaper the seats got, but I didn't see any $10 seats. People likely bought them all up. I am not sure how far ahead tickets go on sale, or maybe they just randomly offer the $10 seats at various times?

I've browsed throught the reservation pages, and I've found $10 seats on short distance, and starting in the fall. As for long distance flights, the lowest fare was at $50, in november. Still pretty affordable though.

If only there were a Baltimore destination/jump off point. I could totally convince the parentals to let me go to Seattle... or maybe San Francisco...
Ahh potential trips are just brewing in my mind...

The only downside is that they do not combine legs for you automatially. So, say you live in SF and want to go to Florida, you have to buy a ticket to Columbus, then look at schedules and buy a separate ticket from Columbus to Florida that will work for your schedule. You then also have to claim and recheck baggage in Columbus if you had any that wasn't carry on. It is still manageable and given that they are only about a month or two old, it's not too bad. Hopefully they do well.
