Cost
Ok, So I have a Eurail pass that'll tackle unlimited travel for 15 days in 2 months - I'm hitting Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Hungry, Poland, Czech. I'm trying to figure out how much 56 nights will cost (extra travel, hostels, food, sights)
I've figured 3000 will do it.
Hostels - 54 nights x 17 euro per night = 972
Food - 15 Euro x 57 days = 855
Transportation - areas my eurail pass doesn't cover (east/central Europe) = 400
Sights, etc = 772 (roughly 14 Euro a day)
does this seem do able?

That should be fine, although it obviously depends how much partying you'll be doing as that is a big factor, espiecally in western europe. Hostels in eastern europe won't cost much more than €10 a night and transportation is pretty cheap.

Honestly, I think most of your figures are a bit low. You can't count on every hostel being 17euro or cheaper. I would budget a little bit higher.
I also didn't see the beer fund? Whats up with that. The food is a good budget, I would suggest eating street food as often as possible. So much cheaper than sitting at a table in a restaurant. If anything, budget for a little more, and hope to come back with left over money. Happy Traveling:D

If you go easy on the booze, and drink more from store bought than bar bought that number looks not to shabby
I ALWAYS found booze did the biggest dent in my wallet

hate to sound like a mum but you need to factor in unexpected costs.. cause the trouble with most unexpected costs is they tend to be pretty big. on my last trip, my friend lost his eurail pass and had to buy a new one for the remaining days. 330 euro he hadn't budgeted. then he got sick and ended up spending around 100 euro on doctors fees and medication. i had to replace the warm coat i left on a train, which i absolutely needed as we were heading to russia in winter. i messed up a booking in dublin and had to pay for a night's accommodation for two that we didn't have. i know its nice to think before you go that you'll be careful and not lose stuff and not make mistakes but it happens to everyone. travel insurance covers a lot of that sort of stuff, but usually not until you get home and make a claim.. so you need to allow some extra cash for unexpected problems like this. god i sound so sensible. oh yeah, and you need beer money! hehe

Good point. The way to look at it is, plan on 3k but have extra money at your disposal in case of emergency.
Whle Marc is right, not all hostels are 17 euros or less I think that is not entirely unreasonable given the countries you are visiting (Germany 20-25 Euros Czech Republic 10-15 Euros). Keep it mind that spending an extra 5 Euros can get you a considerably nicer/more centrally located hostel.
Other than, it looks like you have a good idea of what things will cost, Big Papi. Good luck

ola, thanks for the responses.
I'm Canadian, and i'm living in Ireland right now at a hostel (HI) - so i'm hoping that will hook me up some, as I've stayed at some hostel for free cause I work for an HI hostel. (saved me 63 Euro in Amsterdam!) - but I think 17 is a fair price as while many of the hostel in the East are 10, the extra some might cost in the West will be covered.
As for Beer money, ya, it'll be rough, lol. I'm hoping to drink myself sober by the time i leave Ireland (day after St. Patty's! hahaha)
I have a credit card, and my folks will bail me out if i get screwed. And even though I'm a huge sight seeing buff, I hate being trapped in doors when i'm only in a town for a 3-4 days, so chances are i won't spend as much on museums, etc unless their top class, ya know? So there's beer money too.
cheer,s
Rob
just curious how much you guys would bring on a trip like this?

Well I'm trying to get away with €3,000 for an entire 90 day trip, including flights and everything, although that is through the middle east and central asia and I can live off a very tight budget when needbe.

Even tho it's not alot, to secure a spot on the trains, especially long rides, maybe a good idea. I think doing that cost us between 3-10 euros, and upto 20 euros for a sleeper (kinda nice, kill two birds with one stone).

I keep forgetting that big hit for my budget is always airfare to EU since I live in the states and pay for me and my wife. Once we hit EU, the costs are minimal. Love the grocery stores you find, thats always our budget saver along with the street foods.

it sucks ya have to pay to reserve (considering i bought a rail pass), but 3-10 is not bad considering.
20 for a sleeper is kinda steep for what i imagine will be a poor nights sleep (i'm 6'3, so beds aren't really geared for me, lol)

I think 20 was cheap for a sleeper. For a Munich to Budapest run we paid 80 euros under the table to a crooked Romanian conductor for a 2 person birth.

One of my friends who traveled with us was about 6'3 and he managed, I think the temperature is what can be worse than the size, even tho the size is on the small side.
And yea it's pretty much the price of a hostel, and since you're traveling at night, the time that you could be spending traveling during the day can be used to see the sights.

Sounds like a good budget, but I hope you don't plan to drink very much - you didn't seem to factor nightlife into your calculations.
Which is okay - if you eat out of the supermarcados, I'm sure you can save money on food and spend more on alcohol!
In Madrid for two of the 4 days I was there I ate nothing but salad, and drank a lot... needless to say I puked a lot.
