I'm travelling to Britain in January and am wondering if the Britrail passes are a good value. I've heard than you can buy train tickets and still get off at stops along the way. My trip is planned pretty loosely, and I plan to make stops enroute. My trip will take me all over England (train), Scotland (train) and Ireland (car) over a 3 week period. The pass I'm looking at will cost about $44 cdn per day (just under 20 British Pounds) on the train.
Anybody have any experience with the Britrail pass, or does anybody frequent the British rail system and think this is a good deal?
20 quid and you can go anywhere? Totally good value for money!

I guess either nobody else has a reply for this, or it was pretty obvious from the begining. I ended up buying an 8 days Flexpass. I'm there for 21 days, but will be spending a few days in each city I stop at. After that I'll just have to buy some point to point passes to get me through.
I thought it was a good value. You probably won't need to buy any point to point passes. I had the 4-day flexi pass to get around until I rented a car in the highlands.
Half the time nobody checked the ticket. Just out of London and Liverpool I think. So wait until they come around checking tickets before you fill in the date.
The cheapest way is, by far, is bus. 10euro will get you about anywhere. If you're like me, though, you'll want plenty of Dramamine. Narrow, curvy roads, though no one else I met seemed to have car sickness problems.
If you're speaking of renting a car, it can certainly be a bit pricy and scary. I ended up renting a car in Galway with 3 Cornish lads and even though they're used to driving on that side of the road, only one had a license and he had it less than a year, leaving the damn American the only one allowed to drive. Big difference driving on that side of the road/car but you get used to it. The round-abouts were was messed my all up. Bah! Was kind fun though, and certainly an experience.
Price for the rental ended up being $270 USD up front, got a $44 refund when returned with the same amount of gas. 1 day, full insurance, and under 25 (dunno if that applied over there, but in the US if you even can rent a car under 25, you're charged more).
I got a 5 day Britrail pass and loved it... went allllll over England and up to Edinburgh in that time... exhausting... so I'd suggest gettinga longer one... but still great
