I have been looking into the Navy MWR (morale, wellness, and recreation). It is a division of the military and they do a summer internship program overseas. They have places like: Crete, Italy, Spain, Guam, Bahrain, Korea, and Japan. Seems awesome AND they pay your transportation and give you a weekly allowance. So my question is...
Has anyone done this?

I've looked into working for the US government in a recreation position before overseas and maybe someday I will follow through with the application. I haven't seen that internship program before but if it looks stellar than proceed chica!

Hopefully, it's nothing like the morale and recreation positions that the Japanese "hired" all those young Korean women to work for their military overseas in WW II...
Actually, I shouldn't laugh at that. Not a funny thing for the unfortunate women dragooned into working at brothels.
Anyway, sounds interesting -- post back what you find out!

That sounds like an interesting programme, I'd jump at the opportunity. We've benefitted often from the MWR programmes (though mostly Air Force), but have used some naval facilities in Okinawa...not a bad way to see the world, I'd say. Do you have to be a service member to participate in the internship?

Thankfully there is no boot camp or brothels involved. I don't even think I could make it through boot camp! But yeah, you just go over there as a non military citizen and you get all the benefits of working for the us navy. Including health care for an internship, a luxury I am currently missing. I'll be applying in the next month so we will see if I get it or not! Keep you posted!

Wow, that sounds fantastic. We knew the guy at the MWR/Outdoor Rec facility at our base in Japan was a civilian...too many earrings for active duty! But he got to go along on some of the trips too, kind of as a guide, I guess, so it was a pretty great job for him. I don't know if he was doing an internship or had a longer term job - he was there for most of the time we were in Japan (about 3 years).
Good luck with that, and enjoy it if you get it.

As a service member currently serving in the Army (82nd ABN DIV, hooah) I must say MWR is a great organization and I know we've benefitted greatly from their programs, facilities, etc. They also do a lot for us troops when we're deployed (concerts, facilities for us to used, etc) so it's a great cause (in my humble opinion). Let us know how it pans out!

Is this the program you're speaking of? http://www.mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/i_were.htm
If so, have fun --- they accept very few interns and almost all of them are kept Stateside. Two friends are in now and don't like it --- they too thought they would be headed overseas and it didn't pan out like that.
