Guys, be warned - at least some of us are checking out your shoes. They're definately one of the first things I look at when I meet a guy. Shoes say a lot more about somebody than clothes - anyone can pull off a 'look' for a night, but buying shoes is a committment to a style (or lack thereof).
Oh, and a further word of warning - we're paying attention to socks too. Never EVER wear white socks with black pants!

Shoes huh... hmm I wear a pear of black dress Ecco's, or if I am just bummin I have an old worn out pair of Airwalks that I just can't part with, they are too comfy. I am saving my pennies to get a pair of Ecco walking shoes. But they cost a bit. Although very comfortable for the feet.

Well, since Joan resurrected the topic, here's my take on footwear for clubbin' travelers:
Many clubs have a "no trainers" (sneakers for those of us on this side of the pond) policy, but dark hiking/walking shoes seem to be ok.
It's extra weight, but if I plan on doing any clubbing, I usually lug a pair of semi-dressy black boots with me. While many places may not have a set door policy, there ARE clubs (most notably in Paris) that are not friendly to foreigners, or worse yet, have racist bouncers - and they'll use your dress as an excuse not to let you in. (Even if it's totally casual inside!)
Granted, my general policy is that if a place doesn't want me in there, I don't want to give them my business - but it really does suck when you have a whole group keen to party at a partiuclar place and the bouncer singles one guy out for his choice of shoes and none of ya get in.
I was at REI the other day and saw a set of Merrell mocs that seemed perfect for all around use - they look dressy from the top, are super-comfy, and have all-terrain soles - except the sporty sole is a bit too visible, so I dunno if it'll pass the muster of an uppity bouncer.
My choice of travel footwear: red Puma Californias with Dr. Scholl gel sole inserts (all-around, never ever get tired), flip flops (hostel showers, beach), black Aldo pointy-toed ankle boots w/ the gel soles (for when I'm feeling upscale, but they're actually really cheap)
As for white pants on guys.. YIKES. Although I know a lot of girls who drool over Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan when he used to wear' em. *shudder*
