I believe it is Finland that you can camp for free, for 2 nights in one spot, as long as you are 400m away from the closest building and clean up after your self.

I too was looking into the possibility of doing some camping while in Europe... just in case I ventured off the beaten path.

thanks sjuki...but i will not be anywhere near finland....I am planning on going to italy, greece, Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Amsterdam, Paris and Spain......do you know anything about camping in these areas?

I want to camp so that I can have an open Itinereary and not have to worry about reservations with hostels. I just need to know if there are campsites in many cities...or if i am allowed to make my own campsite where I want to...(Do you think if I wandered to a hidden area and put up a tent, that I would get in trouble with the law?)

thanks again

I know there are campsites in most areas... at least from what I have seen. I've been told you are not allowed to camp wherever, but I am sure if you were out in the middle of nowhere no one would bother you. In some of the smaller towns of E. Europe it is just as cheap to stay at a hostel. Plus, I am not sure how close the campgrounds are to the main cities. So it might be a bit of a pain to try and get into the town everyday to see the signts and what not. Unfortunately I haven't looked too much into the camping aspect yet. Sorry.

When I was last in Europe I made it a point to camp as much as possible.

There are campsites in or neaby most cities. The cost of transportation between the site and the city should be considered, however, as sometimes this makes hostelling just as economical. Try this website:
http://www.karmabum.com/
it has info about camping.

As far as setting up camp in a hidden place you also should consider what kind of tent you have. Is it free-standing or is it mandatory to stake it down to set it up? With a free-standing tent you are not confined to soft ground, but make sure you have a sleeping mat if you decide to camp on concrete for a night.

In some regions it really doesn't matter where you camp. Some places don't even strictly enforce the laws they do have, but I personally didn't take the chance. In the places you are going to I'd suggest staying at authorized sites. It is much safer.

In Amsterdam I stayed at Camping Zeeburg. You can look up their website for more info. It was probably my favorite site (but bring your own TP). They had free valuables lock-up at reception, a shop, and a petting zoo (say hi to the big goat for me!). I was once knocked out of a cannabis-induced haze by a giant turkey who greeted me with a loud gobble as I opened my tent flap in the morning.
The main drawback was having to walk a bit of a distance just to get to the bus stop, but the views along the way are quite nice. You could also just rent bikes from the site and travel like the dutch!

In Switzerland I stayed at a site near the train station in Interlaken. I don't remember exactly what the cost per night was but it wasn't terribly cheap (what is cheap in switzerland?!)
