Tourist fees for US travel visa... wtf congress
This is a current headline on cnn concerning the recent law that was passed by congress. The law tacks on fee for tourists to travel to the USA with the proceeds going to a tourist promotion fund. Very counterproductive if you ask me.
Thoughts... rants?

Wowsers, yeah I also think it seems counterproductive, but then at the same time its only $14, for someone like me who would prob spend $2-3k on flights getting there and am then allowed in for 90 days $14 doesn't worry me. For people closer though that could be a giant pain in the arse.

Wait, so, only for people who need VISAS, right? Not if you're part of the EU and just need to do that waiver program thing?

The fee is specifically for people coming in under the Visa Waiver Program. People that need a normal visa don't pay the fee (but they pay at least $131 to apply for the visa). It won't apply to Canadians since Canada and Mexico have their own special program.
Governments are all trying to raise revenue in counterproductive ways. In November the UK is starting huge new taxes on flights into the UK. For example, the new tax from JFK would be 60 pounds (it's based on distance).
