if you're worried about too many colours of flags, the 'charms' on your tattoo could be more like the traditional jewellery charms you get from overseas.. like you could start with just a maple leaf instead of the whole canadian flag and just get little things like that... like a kangaroo from aus, eiffel tower from france, that kind of thing.
Excellent news on the tattoo! I've got mine on my lower ankle/heel, whatever that area is of a celtic triskel (I got obsessed with Ireland and the culture when I was there). One point to note about the flags, many tattoo artists can't get very detailed or can do something that small so the may end up being larger than you wanted...maybe the name? Oh, or the native name, that will be sweet. Plus than no colors no not too much clutter!
