Man as a fellow long hair I’ve always wanted to do it but never had the balls ever since I took a class on religions. As much as I’ve wanted to I will never be a Rasta man and its kinda there thing. But if you want to do it then I say do it, just let it get good and long first.

At home I barely ever see anyone with dreads and I cannot recall the last time I've seen a white man with dreads in the states. However, while traveling, and especially around Amsterdam, I saw so many people from all over the world rockin dreads. I had planned on doing the same when I got back to the states but I just got a trim the other week

Really? Maybe it has something to do with where you live.

I see Whities sportin' dreads all the time in Vancouver...but then again...we have many pot heads here.

See I get pissed when people generalize others by what they are wearing or how they do their hair.

Rastas may have incorporated dreads into their religion but they certainly did not invent the style. The earliest recorded dread was Samson in the old testament. Ever since dreads have been affliated with not only Rastas but before that those who took the Nazarite Vows.

Some dread history for you hooligans. I learned that many moons ago in my goody two shoes private school.

Jake, I sort of know how you feel. A friend of mine frim church had to shave his dreads off because of all the prejudice he was receiving from it (and he kept them neat too... twisted them every two weeks... took him at least 2-3 hours). He had trouble finding a job, and once he shaved them off, getting a job was simple...

It's sad that people judge others by hair styles..

I'm torn on the dread issue. back in the early 90s I had them for a short period...until I realized how lame they looked. they look pretty bad on 90% of the people who get them imo....that said a friend of mine has had them for a food 12 years or so and they look great....

I say do whatever you feel. When in Europe, I wished I'd had dreads so I wouldn't have to screw with my hair every morning. I personally think dreads look better on girls than guys, unless you're some cool dark hair rocker, but it's your hair, your look, screw other people.

Screw other people if you're NOT trying to get a job in a hotel (or other hospitality/looks-based industry position), that is!

I don't know man. I have had a few friends that have had them and no matter what they did the dreads always seemed to have a strange odor.... But I say hell give it a shot man it can't hurt anything and besides they aren't permanent...
