I'm not sure the point of this post is:

a) to convince us the government blows money on palm trees, truly convince us

B) Do demonstrate, on a small scale, how wasteful our government spending is

c) To point out how nice the palm trees are

d) To rile up American animosity ....

My corresponding responses would be:

a) I don't give a shit, what's the point? There's a landscaping budget and visual effects that come into play with *any* building design

d) I would understand your suprise here in a way .... but in all honesty ....if I was to get passionate about numbers I would be more passionate about numbers that matter .... like the ones Jake pointed out. I would agree with you bro that the small things like landscaping do add up -- and those numbers matter, sure, when seeing how much we spend in Iraq and how many homeless Americans are going hungry ....

... but my main confusion I guess is, what kind of response were you expecting, and what was the reason for bringing this up?

The question remains, what was the budget for the entire project? If it's a 30 million dollar building project, a million or so for landscaping isn't unreasonable..

As a former accountant, I can also point out that the costs should be divided out over the life of the project to get a more accurate estimate of the real value - if the building has a 60 year life span, and the landscaping, with reasonable annual maintenance, is expected to last as long, then the cost is justified. It just looks bad for the short run


In Kuwait, all the major purchases here have to use Kuwaiti contracts (agreement with Kuwait). Stuff here is hideously expensive, but it's also reimbursed by the Kuwaiti government who pays for the cost of the defense of Kuwait. Is this another case like that?

well actually the last number I posted was the estimated civilian dead count in iraq... counting non-iraqi civilians...

And by no means think that I am uber-passionate about those numbers because they are nothing in the vast scheme of people dying everyday but those numbers are in direct correllation with our government and that's why they are here.
