Whichever is cheaper, is what I recommend. First, I'd check the airlines' websites and see what they cost for your destination. Then, phone up a travel agent (or e-mail them) and see if they can beat it.
Lots of the cheap flights and packages you see listed on things like Sherman's List Top 25, or in Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel magazine, or even in the Sunday paper's travel section will actually be refering you to a travel agency. This is fine...it's the price that's important!

I usually book through something like hotwire or travelocity - just depending on where I find the cheapest ticket.

I am finding more and more airlines offer internet specials on their own websites that travel agents and many travel search engines do not have access to. There are generally more terms and conditions, but some bargains can be had.

Yeah I prefer the Internet but travel agents can have good deals too.

I booked online I figured my ticket was $610 and it couldn't get much better than that.

I searched online and in the newspaper to get a feel for prices and then visited the travel agents in person so I could negotiate. There were two agents in the same shopping complex and I walked back and forth between them informing what the other was offering and getting them to beat that price (or give me extras) each time - worked a treat!

Yeah, i took advantage of a web special on AirNewZealand.com for my upcoming trip.. came out to a shade under $1k, which is great for peak season, especially with mulitiple cities. I looked up the same itinerary on a few sites the other week, and it's ranging from $5k-$6k!!!!
