Im not a pro on Thailand yet, but I can suggest The "Fat Camel" in Auckland New Zealand. They have a bus that runs from the airport (which is a long ass way from the city) and its like 10 bucks for the trip. The place was like 20 NZD a night when I was there and the atmosphere was rockin! Quite clean and they can organize some phatty trips down towards the south island for pretty cheap prices. Check out the Powerstation Nightclub while there in Auckland. Have a blast!!!! B)

On less than $5 a day to live on, you just may be in Thailand longer than you think :P

Havenīt been there myself, but my neighbors ex-boyfriend (just broken up after 5 yrs together) went there about 4 months ago and hasnīt even called her! Iīm sure itīs because heīs having a buhhh-last !

Yeah, Iīve read good things about the Fat Camel. Thatīs a good example of how all hostels should be

Iīll look for some links that might help ya B)
