Default Wine tasting in France-- anyone done it??

I am hoping to do a little wine tasting in France, but I am having trouble finding any tours/wineries that are backpacker welcome. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Thank you!

Where are you planning to be in France and for how long? That will be a start in determining wineries to hit up. The Loire is popular [read: heavily touristed] for wine tasting. Personally I'd love to hit the Rhone area in the Languedoc/Provence region, that would be my first stop specifically for wine... but unless you're going to, say, Avignon, it'll be out of the way for you. Do you want to go on an organized, several-day wine tour? Those look pretty freakin' expensive. Just showing up to some wineries by yourself wherever you happen to be might be a better option... depending, of course, upon the winery. Some may ONLY be open to tour groups and/or private appointments. If nothing else, your hostel would probably have some good ideas.

*edited to add: I did some wine tasting at couple of wine shops in Paris. This might be a more reasonable alternative if you're not going to be spending oodles of time there.

Thank you! We are going to Provence and I was actually hoping to stay in Avignon. I was there several years ago and loved it! That is a good point, if we ask around at the hostel, hopefully they will have good suggestions.

I tend to worry and over plan. Thanks for the advice

You're welcome! Avignon is lovely. And at the risk of using a tired phrase, you can't swing a dead cat in Provence or Languedoc Rousillon without hitting a winery. If you're going to be with someone else, I'd consider staying in a small pension/hotel rather than a hostel. If I remember correctly the hostel selections in Provence are either 1. few and far between or 2. grotty as all hell. And frequently the cost of splitting a room either ends up to be similar or sometimes even cheaper than two dorm beds. Have a great time!!

Good to know! I will have to check out the hotels there. We don't have too much money to spend but would love go tasting. Thanks again for the advice!
