So I just found out today that my parents suck...ass....apparently they are going to <span style=\'color:red\'> JAPAN</span> without me...MTFing JAPAN!!!! They're taking my 2 younger brothers but leaving my older brother and me behind...apparently we can look after the dog & cats. Whoop-di-friggen-doo. This sucks ass, I move out of the house for a YEAR and I'm booted out of the first family vacation we've had in 5 years (a total of our 3rd good one ever, and in the 1st I was 3...). Apparently as I went to Europe last year (which I PAID FOR) I've had all the travelling I need for next while...bastards... sorry, just needed to rant

On the upside I've decided I'm going to do SWAP volunteer in Africa next year & track endangered species making sure farmers dont mess w/ them which I'm super excited about.

futboller 03-20-2006 07:44 PM

When are they going? You should save up some money and hop a plane the same week, even if just for a few days.

"Sorry mom, I can't look after the cat. I'm getting baked in A-dam." :smoke:

Something to that effect. :hypocrite:

That sounds freakin awsome!!! How do you get into that???

Oh, and that sucks about Japan, but it's just the way it goes with younger kids, they get everything!!

TERI 03-20-2006 08:59 PM

Shitty about Japan dude :friends: . but that SWAP idea is def. something to get excited about and look forward to. congrats

Bastards! If it's any consolation, my parents have been to Japan numerous times without me (I haven't gotten to go since I was really little) and next month they're going to Iran without me. Apparently, I'm not their baby boy anymore. :fyou:

Ok, so maybe I'm a bit old for that..

Congrats on the Africa thing, though. That sounds freakin' awesome. You can do Japan when you're older and have waaaay more money. ;)

space virgin 03-21-2006 12:19 AM

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that, Laura!! :kisscheek: Bastards indeed.

And Omid, I thought you didn't want to head back to Iran until after the age of 40 or something so they can't toss you into mandatory military service...

omisan 03-21-2006 12:25 AM

I know, I know, but I still wanna go!

space virgin 03-21-2006 12:32 AM

Couldn't you "sneak" in with your American passport? Oh wait, on second thought...

But I don't blame you, I'd love to go to Iran. :)

tumblezweedz 03-21-2006 12:35 AM

Ohhh, that's awful.

I had a similar terrible experience in uni - I went out to the airport three times in one week - picking up my mom from UK, dropping my sister off to TO, dropping my mom off to Japan (Japan seems to be a recurring theme). :taz: It was so depressing being at the airport and then turning around and going home. When my mom got back from Japan I got my revenge though, announcing..."oh, by the way, I'm going to Russia in January." It was her life-long dream. She has gone now, but I went first!

SWAP in Africa sounds like a sweet revenge...

SWAP's just a program that we have here in Canada and the US where they basically set everything up for you when you travel like accommodation, volunteer opportunities etc (that is, if you choose the volunteer aspect of the program. To work is a little different). They have a bunch of opportunities of where you could volunteer/places you could travel to and that's just one of the options for the SA program....I'm not guaranteed the spot b/c obviously the amount of opportunities they're given to dish out changes each year but I'm crossing my fingers for that position (majorly) and I think I'm going to actually ask a representative today if they could tell me how to be the 1st in line for that one (seeing as I am planning on doing this thing a little over a year in advance I think I should be ok...)

lol tumble, you're awesome  :kisscheek: Yeah it's ok...Africa has always been my dream so this will be a kickass trip for sure.

benna2 03-21-2006 07:09 AM

I think I would be definately bitter if my parents decided to take a trip and didn't include me....

Sorry Laura!! But you will have a great time in Africa!!

That's one of the main reasons why I've resisted getting any pets. Really puts a cramp in the sails-to-the-wind, travelling lifestyle...they're commitments not to be taken lightly.

bluepea 03-21-2006 08:02 AM

Wow, what a bunch of bastards. I'd be pissed! :hunter: Okay, not really pissed, but ... well, I'm sure you know. You could always save for a plane ticket to go along and mooch off of them for the rest.

Africa sounds very cool!

simply_angelic 03-21-2006 09:03 AM

actually, I think I'm okay with it now...I mean not really but I've shifted my focus. I've pretty much just spent the past 4 hours going crazy reading up on other African opportunities and now I am PSYCHED! :mf_w00t2:

Wow I love the way I study for my chem quiz/calc test/physics quiz/EXAMS in my spare time  but this is just waaaaaay more exciting.

There are so many super cool opportunities out there, it'll be so difficult deciding which to do (particularily those hooked up by the brits, and for that I thank them :kisscheek:  they're my new heros).

There's one where I can monitor the predator/prey relationships in the wild to make sure that new animals they've placed arent influencing the natural balance negatively and it seems realllllllly cool. And there's another one where you capture species and move them to new areas where they should be, which would also be really good experience....and there are others where you care for injured animals in rehabilitation centres for the wild animals which pertains the most to what I want to become (wildlife vet) but just not as exciting as actually tracking and monitoring the species in their real life habitat...ohmanohmanohmanohman I just got myself really crazy psyched for this.....

dont mind the dancing men...but I think that's actually what I will be doing in about 5 seconds...I think I'm already doing it internally.....

futboller 03-21-2006 09:07 AM

Those all sounds great! Definitely let us know what you decide to do.

tumblezweedz 03-21-2006 09:18 AM

What an incredible opportunity. I like the idea of the monitoring of newly introduced animals - that would give some pretty amazing insight, and there are so many re-introduction programmes going on all over the place (wolves, buffalo, etc) I'm sure the insights would apply in different places. There are also so many problems arising out of alien species being introduced and destroying the native habitat and fauna...

Is there anything you could apply for that would give you a bit of experience in different areas? A month of observation, a month in the clinic, etc? I guess that would be the ultimate...

  I'll do a little jig for you while I finish making dinner!

Aww, hell, why didn't anyone tell me about this when I was in school? Back in my day, you were lucky to get an internship at the local gas station! ;)
