I am also in this boat. Working a really well paid job for the last 4 years and there is plenty of prospect within the company, but I want out. I need some time for my self.
I've talked about going travelling for the last 2 years, things have come up along the way which have held me back and the longer I stay the more $$$ I save for the future, but at the end of the day I need to follow my heart, which says GET THE FUCK OUT and have some fun. So April next year I'm off.
Deep down I'm sure you know what the answer is.

Oh, great! My rambling on about my trips has helped cause Wandering Soul to quit his job as a Russian translator with the U.S. government.
Here I am, undermining the security of my country... :D

You guys are a bad influence. I just registered today and I am already thinking about selling all my stuff and spending at least a year travelling.
Lets see, I already have the house, so I could rent that out. I could sell all but my most important material possessions. I'd probably have enough money to live off for at least a year and still have a home to come home to when it was time to get back to reality.
I discovered my passion for travel a bit later in life than most people, I'm 35 now, and now I want to get out and see the world while I still can. Plus, while my job pays very well, I am so tired of it I am ready to walk if it doesn't change soon. The beaches of Thailand are calling me back......

I think the key is to figure out what you really want out of life. If you only hand 1 year left to live what would you do?
Would it be spend time with friends and family, work hard, volunteer somewhere, go travel, or write the greatest ever book or whatever.
Then when you figure out all the things that you really need to do, figure out how to do it and go for it.
For me i have a list of about 20 things that I want to do in my life and i'm slowly working my way down the list (#1 finish PhD)
#2 go travelling

You tell 'em, Dio! Best way to look at it. :D
Until this job, all of mine were low paying, no real future type ones. And, it was only in the last 3-4 years of working for the airline that the money has gotten even "average." No doubt, I'm probably still on the low end in income earning for my age. But ah...giving up a salary to travel can make you so rich in experiences, eh?

Mike thats so true, money certainly isn't everything. I had a job I hated that paid brilliant money. i stuck at it for 7 months hoping it would get better but in the end I just quit. Was out of work for 4 months before landing my current job that pays almost as much but the bonus is I love it.
Told my boss last week that i'm finishing up at the end of January. She knew I was heading overseas when I got the job and heres the best bit....She said whenever i get back from my trip my job will be waiting for me!!!! Oh Yeah!!!! How cool is that!!!
I was sooo not expecting to have a job when I got back but I guess my networking has paid off. Let that be a lesson to the kids outthere....hehehehehe ...... That has taken alot of pressure off so now I can really enjoy the trip.
