For all those who have seen Rick Steves' Travels In Europe (on American Public TV) I am curious to know your opinion. Personally, I like some of his advice but can't stand his whiny voice or lame humor. However, his website had been helpful before.
Also, does anyone know if they are still making new episodes of Globe Trekker? I love that show.

I dont think hes much help to backpackers however he is the older tourist budget advice god, for older people who wanna go on holidays but dont wanna live in hostels I think he gives great advice, plus hes pretty thourough with the places he visits and give the must see and do things, so I think hes done a good job and I have even learned a thing or 2 even though he isnt much for my type of travel

I think his books and his TV shows are geared towards two separate types of travel. His books are useful for the backpacker, with information on cheap places to stay and so on. His shows are always, "We rented a car and drove from here to here..." I mean, how many backpackers rent cars in Europe?

I had to vote "Travel Genius" I love Rick and his show (I've seen them all). It would be so cool if I met him in Europe this summer
But I agree with others. He's not backpacker but some of his advice is still useful and he shows you places you might want to go.
I love Globe Trekker too but they haven't been playing new ones in my area I just get ones I haven't seen from the public library.

I write this as I finish a Rick Steve's episode on Rome I rented from the library (he talks about the Lira so I'm guessing it's pretty old). I however voted him a geek because, though he does try and give you good avice, he tries to "sell" Europe to you. He over sells everyplace he sees as being superbly spectaurarly tremendously exastautively beautiful..... I know it's gonna be beautiful you don't need to sell me, just give me the facts. So in other words I have a hard time getting the real facts from his adjective abuse.

For those of you who're into Globe Trekker - it now goes by the name Pilot Guide like the books, and airs on OLN as well as a number of other networks...

I've never seen Globe Trekker, but I watch Pilot Guides whenever its on OLN and its pretty good. The best part about that show is that their traveller is def. trying to do things as cheap as possible and they go to alot of places you don't see on normal travel shows. Ex. the last episode I caught a bit of was on Tunisia and Libya. I also watch Don't Forget Your Passport, but I think that's Canadian.

Heh. Tony Bourdain. I love that guy. He's a fantastic writer too.
Cash Peters' show can be mildly amusing and even somewhat informative occasionally, but goddamn that guy is a whiney pissant. He rarely has anything nice to say to anyone about anything, even though he has a right jolly veneer.

Hehe, yeah thats why its funny - hes a total pussy. The one where he went to New Zealand was hilarious, he was scared to do anything. But I prefer Anthony Bourdain's show too, the history and influences of different countrys cuisine is a novel concept for a travel show, especially one done with humor.

How about Rudy Maxa's show Europe to the Max? Anyone seen it? I bought the DVD set from Costco a few months ago. Seems to be a pretty straight forward guy.

cash peters is a cool but anthony bourdain is the man. his segment in iceland was probably the best, in my opinion. i found out that the pbs stations in boston broadcasts episodes of both globe trekker and rick steves (the new ones). if anyone's from the area and wants the time/channels, let me know.

I really think Rick Steves is a travel god. Anyone that can take something that they love and transform it into a multi million dollar company deserves at least a little respect in my book. In addition, I have met him on a couple of occasions because he holds monthly travel seminars near Seattle, where his ETTBD company is headquartered. In person, he is a much more relaxed and down to earth guy (I've even found him to be very funny.) And for advice to anyone in the Seattle area, I really do recommend seeing one of his seminars, they are much more informative to the backpacking crowd than one would expect stricly judging from his TV shows.

Rudy Maxa is ok, but he always seems to be eating at and staying in expensive places.

Many of you know how I feel about Bourdain... he is my culinary idol. :D
Suggest that you read "A Cook's Tour" and then read any other bland travel book. Won't be the same. I will say this:
Rick Steves knows where to go and what to see, and how to pack really light.
Cash Peters, well, he sorta gets on my nerves, but tends to dig out the cheaper places in various towns/areas.
Globe Trekker/Pilot Guide isn't half bad, but depends on the host you get. The one about Thailand and SE Asia and Macchu Pichu stick out as good episodes.
Bourdain does it right: Sees the sights, immerses himself in the culture by eating the local food with the locals. Not once until I got into the airport did i not eat "comida tipico" in Costa Rica. (American Fast Food everywhere. Couldn't even get a decent gallo pinto or cassado! Bummer! ) Its a great way to experience it, even if you question the ingredients (many times I wasn't sure if it was "carne" or "perro..." :D )

I think Rick Steves is a very down to earth, no B.S. kind of person. As well as an extremeley experianced traveler I have 4 of his books, and 7 DVD's. Not one of them isn't worth what I paid for it. They are all very helpful, and have a differant perspective than your usual guide book / DVD. His "back door" approch to travel is very helpfull to people who don't want to deal with the huge crowds. I do have to admit though... he is a bit of a wuss. I noticed a previous post about how he rents cars, and that doesn't work for backpackers, keep this in mind... he is traveling with a film crew, and lots of equipment. I, for one, woulden't want to backpack around europe with all that gear.
