These kinds of things happen in the UK as well (there was a case of a father and brothers beating their sister to death over marriage or seeing a white man) and I wouldn't be surprised if they happen in the US. I've meet very well educated Pakistani women doctors that described growing up to be more or less on a par with my childhood.
In general I've found the vast majourity of all people are basically good given half a chance. Nobody sets out to do the wrong thing or has "Evil" as their main goal. Circumstance and what you where thought as a child has alot to do with the method a person uses to survive in the world. Can you really call them bad if they where thought this was the right thing to do?
