So, today I go in to work and the new schedule is posted. As it is I am down to working 30 or so hours from 40, but with all the pre-tax deductions it doesn't change my take home much. But the new schedule I am down to a whooping 16 hours a week! Howdy freakin hoo... How the hell are you supposed to live off 16 hours a week?!?

While I was hoping to keep my job with 'guaranteed' hours and stable pay long enough to make sure my business would get off the ground, it doesn't look like I am gonna have much luck with that. Luckily enough I have been able to get some money floated to cover my expenses if I can't pay them right now, so I can just go gun ho on opening my shop.

Here we are entering the 'busy' season with Home Depot and they are cutting everyones hours, so all I have to say is Home Depot!

Just wanted to rant, about my great job situation

Sij!

Totally understand. I used to work at a drug store (cashier bitch) and they would totally screw you around like that. Around xmas they need ya so much and then they'll screw you down to 15 hours a week. I don't know how somebody lives off of that. Then you have to get two part time jobs and that's a bitch to manage. I worked there four years and I was getting 15-20 hours a week. Seniority? Hell no then they have to pay you more benefits. So they like the younguns working all the shifts.

I realize I'm very lucky to have a full time job right now, even though I bitch about how much I work.

Hear ya on that one, Sij.

I currently have a full time and a part-time job, though the PT one is with a catering company so they call me when they want me.

But as of this evening I've logged 46 hours at the FT job, and have a 10 hour shift ahead of me tomorrow... OT is time and a half, and they pay it willingly.

But the previous FT job- always wanted me to work, but didn't wanna pay me OT. And when I would, the owner would yell at the chef about my OT, and the chef would explain how the owner wouldn't let him hire another person at lower pay to split my hours, etc etc etc...

Prior to my discovery of explosives, I managed a Kinko's... lucky for me, although we had seasonal variations, it only meant more hours available, not less.... we managed to avoid the whole 'screw the employees over for hours' thing that most retail sticks to. (I guess that makes it the top layer of the bottom-feeder retail jobs!)

Yeah, it seems that the large retail chains, freely use hours all year until they get into the fall and realize they are way over budget and have to hit their plan sales marks, so they cut the overhead of hours so they don't spend so much money, regardless of the fact that it destroys customer service during one of the biggest selling seasons. Which then stresses out your employees, just in time for christmas. Such great plans these corporate monkeys come up with.

I remember one year when I was working at Rite Aid, they did a massive hour cut in December, people went from 40 to 12 hours. It was rediculous. But hey, those CEO's gotta make their millions somehow.

Without a doubt, I believe the number one thing wrong with American business right now is massive overpaying of CEOs and top management. NOBODY earns hundreds of millions of dollars per year. They may get paid it -- and thus rape their own company -- but they sure as Hell didn't earn it. Or deserve it.

Well I have played a couple of my wild cards and managed to secure my hours for now, and keep myself from transfering to tool rental from hardware. I am also kind of a bystander of a debate with store management about why we were never made full-time which would guarantee our hours for the most part. Since we worked 12 continuous weeks at 40 hours which means we should have been made full time. So, it may be a bit interesting yet.

I haven't driven by my shop in a few days, but I imagine they should be getting ready to install the front door at least. I have a meeting with the city about my sign on friday morning. joy joy...

Just hang in there and you will get your business up and running sooner than you think. Good luck.
