Well, you eat lots of spicy crawfish, and drink lots of (not so spicy) beer!
It's just like a barbecue, usually, cept the menu's different.

It also depends on how big the boil is, cause at one here in Birmingham there is a huge concert that goes on along with the crawfish. Its mainly just a social event though.

as I suspected.
Now political agenda. Would it be wise to just stay out of political discussions for the first while. I hear those "discussions" can get reaaal heated in the states and thats kind of foreign to Canadians. It's pretty laisez-faire up here.

Uhm... Thats Louisiana... I mean, it happens here but...
Lots of people do get firey about politics, but if you have the lassiez-faire thats alright too. I think you'd have more problems adjusting to our weather. Be prepared for summers where all you have to do is walk one step out your front door to be drenchd in sweat. Summer itself is from Mid April to sometime in october. It's great. I went swimming on my birthday last year, november. More importantly, what part of texas are you moving to? The cities are different from the west texas nothingness which is worlds away from the east texas swamps and rednecks and bears no resemblance to the central Hill Country.. And how old are you? Still in highschool? College?

I'm from Southwestern Ontario myself and have been living in Texas on and off since I was 15. I'm here now in fact. There are a few differences, but bellelass has it right when she said the weather will affect you. Hot to us in that part of Ontario is a nice kinda comfortable hot where you "could" go swimming if you felt like it. Hot here in Texas is so bloody hot that you really feel like you will die if you don't jump in a pool. Of course the people are friendly and will be interested to hear about life in Canada and if you really sleep in igloos and all that stuff. (Americans really don't know too much about Canadians, no offence was meant by that at all by the way!! )
If you are in highschool or even college for that matter, sports are a huge deal here! The high school football games get huge turnouts...Like I'm talking more than the average Toronto Blue Jays games!! But it's like a normal thing here.
I really like Texas....hopefully you will too. Good luck with the move!

Actually its not me moving to Texas, its just my dad. But that does mean I will be visiting often. And the Louisiana crawfish boil thing makes sense cause my dad is moving like half hour from the louisiana border. Orange, Texas, if you know it. Haha, so i guess that me ans hes moving to the redneck side, which is alright, he's a grown home grown farm boy, so he'll do fine.
I've been to Texas twice, once in the summer, the weather wasnt a HUGE shock. Their normal day weather was like Toronto's current heat wave. Around mid 30's, high 90's for our fahreinheit friends. I guess having that for months on end would get a little tiresome though.
The sports I've heard about, my dads fiance told me her hometown is just like Friday Night Lights. Kinad wondering why people care so much about high school ball.
Oh, and im 21
benna, where in ontario did you movie from?

oooh, out by the infamous Walkerton.
I grew up in Sarnia, moved to Caledon and currently reside in Oakville, working downtown Toronto when I'm not in school at Sheridan.

If it were my dad...
"Orange, TX? How far is that from Austin? Mmm.. ok, how 'bout when I come to visit you, we just meet up in Austin? No, seriously, dad. I won't go anywhere else there. What? Well then, you're not my father anymore."

First off, omisan is right get to Austin, because your dad is going to be in east Texas and if you’re from the state that’s all I need to say. But your not so let me fill you in, first off I love all of Texas, however the east would not be my favorite. It’s the three R's that thrive out there, religion, racism, and rednecks. Do not go to Viter TX, its not as dangerous as everyone makes it out to be, but it's still home to the clan, and that’s not a joke. I dated a girl from there whose uncle was a grand master or dragon or wizard or whatever the top dude is called and she can remember being a little girl and looking down the street at his house and seeing group of burning crosses (she had no contact with him when we were dating). Second I don’t know about the whole high 90's being average for summer maybe the early part and late spring, but its July 2nd and were hitting the triple digits already. 115 true temp, that would be in the shade, was as hot as it got last summer. And last Texas is a republican state the Texas legislature is dominated by republicans, Austin is split 50/50, not sure about the other big cities, but the rural areas like the place your dad will be living is going to be conservative republican. As for me I just don’t talk politics that much.
That being said, the people are great, the women are the best looking in the world, when it’s not summer its one of the most beautiful places on earth, and there is always something going on. it just sucks your dad will be out in east Texas, I guess he can always go gamble a little further east across the boarder.
