This happened a little while ago, I'm not sure why I'm posting it now but I thought about it earlier and it still cracks me up. I had received a gift certificate for a haircut and manicure at a local joint, not normally where I go. I went in for my appointment and my stylist was a cute-but-not-quite-drop-dead-gorgeous asian girl, probably about 19 or so. (I later found out she was 18 and Vietnamese.) Anyway, as cosmetologists are wont to do, she started chatting and asking me questions and making some of the most incredibly asinine statements that for long periods of time all I could do was gape at her.

"I've always heard that asian women are exotic and that white women look so boring, and that men love asian women. Do you think this is true?" ..... Uh.... Eh? Thanks for simultaneously insulting me and asking for my vaulted opinion, there, lady. Yeesh. (My reply was that there are a couple places in the world where white women would be considered exotic, so it's all relative. She gave me a blank look as if to say "where on earth would that ever happen?" haha. ) Next:

After asking me how old I am and my response, she simultaneously dropped her jaw and my hand in pure astonishment-- unfeigned-- and said "Oh my god, girl! No way, you can't be that old! Wow, you look good for your age then, I thought you were 23 or so. Do you use moisturizer?" LOL-- well, I'm 30, is 7 years really considered THAT big of a difference? Christ. And the finale:

When she was finished cutting and styling my hair, which was okay but not fantastic, she goes "Oh, this cut looks so cute on you! You look young again!" Not being able to let impolite statements slide, I tilted my head and asked her what she meant by that, exactly, since earlier she was under the impression that I was 23. She stammered that the hairstyle just made me look younger. (Honestly I didn't see much difference.)

I'm glad it was a gift certificate, because I doubt I'll be going back to that place again-- unless I'm feeling the need to be insulted by a young, dumb cosmetologist.

That's why I only get my hair cut once a year...twice if I have something special. Granted I trim the mullet myself. I may be from michigan, but not the U.P.

I normally love going to get my hair done, but I've never had any of those really uncomfortable conversationalists. Wow - she was ball-sy! At least she didn't say "Only thirty? I would have guessed like 45!"

(BTW I mean nothing like that as I don't recall I've ever seen a pic of you or anything!!)

Haha nice story sv. well look on the bright side at least she didn't completely butcher your hair!

I hate going to hair salons. Oh my goodness. It is an ordeal. My hair is really really thick so the hairdstylists take one look at me and don't know what to do. In Australia I saved money by getting my hair cut at the training schools and it would take the poor student TWO (not exaggerating) hours to cut my hair. Then I'd have the supervisor fixing her mistakes. And then for the finale i'd have the rest of the students gather around me and check out my hair. They'd then tell me that is was sooooooo thick. No shit sherlock!

That's funny considering you're the author of this post, where 30 + is relegated to not just being considered over-the-hill, but practically \"one foot in the grave\"!! I think you scared a few people away from voting on that poll.

Roz-- No, she didn't yammer on too much. But when she did, she really shouldn't have said anything. I don't think that girl could keep her foot out of her mouth if she was talking about the weather.

is that the haircut the chick gave you?? If it is i reckon she actually did a pretty damn good job, despite having her foot in her mouth the whole time .

I'd have put you around the 20 mark myself, dunno if that's a compliment or an insult.

Ha, ha...that is a pretty funny story. Okay, one thing in her defence...the ole' culture thing. Do you think she was born in this country or is somewhat recently arrived? The reason I ask is that I have spent a bit of time in Asia for both work and fun (China, Taiwan, Thailand) and one thing that takes people back a bit is the sheer bluntness that most Asians have when it comes to comments and remarks about your personal appearance. They do this with themselves as well...not just foreigners. It is very common for an Asian person to comment on the fact that you look like you gained weight, look older or younger than your age, etc. So...while it is rather astonishing when you encounter this bluntness....it is more a culture thing...it is not generally taken as rudeness...just someone speaking their mind, whether good or bad.

The women who is the finance manager at my company in Taiwan will always tell me whether she thinks I look fatter or skinnier than the last time she saw me. She will also always talk about how handsome so, and so is from the corporate office. She is in her 40's and is not interested in the least in "so and so", but it is just very common to speak your mind about people's appeatance. So....to make a short story long...don't take anything she said too personally and giver her another chance if she did a good job on your hair...which it looks like she did!

Hmm....I'm not so sure about that.....

maybe it's true, as I've never been to China nor Taiwan, but from experience, I must say I haven't met very many Asians whom I'd be able to generalize as what you said..

Yep, I know exactly what you're talking about, but that kind of thing usually doesn't bother me one bit. This girl, on the other hand, was born here. Her parents immigrated in the mid 80's, if I remember correctly.

Farmboy: Nope, that haircut was done by someone else-- at my regular salon!

Omi, I don't think its politically correct to call your johnson a hot poker...nor that act sterilizing her uterus.......the only exception is if you used the pick-up line, How do you like your eggs in the morning? Scrambled or fertelized?
