Hi all, i need some worldly advice and wording material. I'm just about to hand in my resignation maybe this coming friday or earlier next week and was wondering what ppls have put in their own resignation letters. Need help, examples, how to word it!!!!!

This is my 1st job out of uni, i've been here nearly 2yrs so i've never had to do this before!!!! I fly out on the 19th of April, but thought i'd stop work on the 14th (get my things, life & house together), so that means i'm giving m boss like 6ish weeks which i think is pretty generous.

Cheers for all your help in advance.

Kel

Okay so these are never fun ...but they don't have to be torture. Just keep it short and sweet, a lot of people make the mistake of making this long drawn-out explaination of why they are leaving . All your employer needs to know, and all they really care about is that you're leaving. So here are some tips:

1. Use normal business letter format with your name and address and your supervisor's. The letter should be given to your direct supervisor.

2. State that you are resigning (I regret to inform you that I will be resigning from my position as of... or something along those lines) and the effective date of your resignation.

3. Tell your employer that you are thankful for the opportunity that they provided you (especially because it was your first job out of school) and that the things you learned were invaluable to your career. Even if it isn't true say it, there is no reason to burn bridges. You will probably need them as a reference to your next job.

4. If you feel like it is necessary, give them a SHORT (1-2 sentences) explaination of why you have decided to leave.

5. End it with something along the lines of "again I thank you for the opportunities that I was given" and then Sincerely, you

Good luck, hopefully I helped a little bit!

Britkettle's advice is on the money.

Oh, and I dunno about wherever you are, but in the US, 2 weeks is considered the industry-standard courtesy for giving notice... Sooner is, of course, nicer for the employer, but if you give htem too much time, they might just make you go sooner than planned, and you'd lose out on some money.

Dear Generic Person,

I regret to inform you that your services as my employer are no longer required.

Advancment in my personal growth do not include you, my immediate supervisor or this company/corperatiion.

I feel that my skill set and knowledge will be better served in alternate venues, which will reflect more positivly on my life and will be more appreciated on an international scale.

Do not attempt to coherse me to re think this, as it will just push me further away from you, and this corparation. It is time to go our seperate ways.

You team bulding efforts were shallow and could be easly mistaken for bad acting, it is known through out your subordinates that your only goal was to build yourself up, not the team.

Regards,

Nikon

PS...Please send my final pay cheque to...Oh wait, I will be treking across the world, feel free to use it to have your lips surgically removed from your bosses ass.

^ beautiful!!!!!

but seriously, yes...short and sweet....it's not an essay, just a reference for them showing that you quit and they didnt fire you(for unemployments sake) and if you do keep it simple, and they didnt hate you, you now have a good reference for future endeavors

you don't know how much i want to do this!!! my boss still wouldn't show any expression... oh well.

saying that, i think it is really important not to burn bridges... cause you never know when you will need a reference... but if you don't need a reference... just stop coming to work!!!

hey,
Im handing in my resignation soon too.
a few tips i have learnt along the way.

giving 6 weeks notice will make it a bitch at work. My last job, i had to give 4 weeks, and the whole 4 weeks, it was contant grief from work mates giving me shit, boss trying to tempt me to stay etc.
also, if you give 6 weeks notice, your boss could just say, dont worry, you can leave in 2...then youve lost a months worth of pay.
Unless you plan on working there when you get back, look out for number one man, and give the standard 2 weeks as your contract says.

heres a demo letter:

Dear ____

As required by my contract of employment, i hereby give you 2 weeks notice of my intention to leave my position as ______.

I wish both you and __(company name)__ every good fortune and i would like to thank you for having me as part of your team.

yours sincerly,

Nikon

anyways...just my 3 cents

ohhhh BS....... Mr T shites all over that 70's show avatar!!

thought i'd update you guys, its now tuesday arvo here in AUS and i put my resignation in last friday @ work, gave them 4weeks + 2days notice (we get 2/3 days public holidays in next few weeks too, so it ends up being 4weeks).

And like all you said it felt good too do, the boss was a bit shocked actually, "here is this work you wanted in this network drive and i've got something else to say i'm tendering my resignation" -> then gave him the letter!!. first thing he said was '"i'm not accepting it" ..... I was like WTF ummmm okay.

But so far so good all seems good here.... let the count down to the 19th of April begin!!
