What a horrific experience for that girl. Thank God that she´s okay and that the hoods took nothing!
Generally speaking, the waist money belt has been the safest option to protect yourself from petty thieves, but I know that the more serious hoods are aware that they exist and will probably go for that location if they got rough with you.
I would still carry my personal crap with me, as oppsosed to leaving it in my backpack at the hostel all day long unattended. What other options are there ?

First off, make sure you know the risks of the country you are traveling to.

No person wants to be in that situation thats for dam sure. My aunt had a bad thing happen to her in Germany back th 80's , so attacks on budget trav'las is not a new thing. I guess do you best not to be in a situation where something like could posibly happen. You could try one of these classes for a little extra protection:

World Wide Self Defence Network

Yeah, I believe it's been studied that women who fight back during rape statistically stand a better chance of stopping the attack. The attackers often will give up and look for easier, weaker prey instead. So jab those sharp fingernails in the eyes, ladies!

that was not a good experience, but good thing nothing happened to her.

As for attacks, I went to Chiapas, Mexico last year in april, and man that was a very scary trip, Our driver was telling us a situation that had happened two days before.

He said that when you are traveling throught the highway in chiapas you should not travel when its getting dark, because it is really dangerous. He told us that two days prior to us being there the gorrilla warriors in the jungle assaulted a van. what they did was shoped a tree down on the road so the van will not be able to go through, and as soon as the van comes to a complete stop, a bunch of gorrilla warriors come out of the bushes and attack you, and take what ever you have, from shoes, money, to clothes. They don't hurt you at all, only if you fight back.

After that story we made sure when we went sight seeing that we will leave early enough. Very scary. Do as what CD said. Make sure you know what type of assaults or danger have been happing to tourist to the country you are visiting.

i dunno. It really scared me because i always travel alone. I was born and raised in a city, so I'm pretty much aware of my surroundings, but I wouldn't think twice about walking down that street either. I think the scariest thing that she said was that the other people on the street were just watching the whole thing happen and not even helping her. What's happening to our world.??? And also how they were trying to make her pass out. Sometimes i don't understand this world.

Mexican police are entirely corrupt. I'd be wary of going down there without a local. Or maybe I'm over-reacting. I went down with some locals and had a great time. But on my own, yes, it would have been tougher..

I think what we need to remember is that bad shit happens everywhere.
My hubby worked night shift and on the weekends after we were all in bed, he'd go for drives. He was driving in dt Van once, and all of a sudden, 5 big guys blocked off the street, forcing Alex to stop. Just as he was about to stop, another car came along

Very true that crime such as this can happen anywhere, however, we in USA and Canada are blessed in that we have a much heavier law enforcement presence then most countries in Central and South Amercia, so much of this type of crime is kept to a minimum. Ive been in some pretty freaky places in the usa but have so far been lucky enough to not be there at the wrong time, however, in some parts of south America, there really is no "wrong time". Ive heard a lot of horror stories from friends who are just starting to come home from adventures and it seems as though certain places (Peru being one) are getting worse. I can only suggest that you use common sense people, its really one of your best friends.
