hola todos!
I just watched a great French/Spanish film called "l'auberge espagnole" (Audrey Tautou has a small role but i don't recognize the rest of the cast - they're all brilliant though). It's about seven uni students from all over europe sharing an apartment in Barcelona for a year. Granted it's not about backpacking per se, but it is about packing your stuff and ditching the 9 to 5 world to experience new things and make new friends in a different country with a different language. To me this is the essence of backpacking so i especially enjoyed that aspect of "l'auberge" and i bet many of you will too.
Any way I mention it cuz i wanna know if any of you have any films in this vein you'd like to reccomend.
BTW "l'auberge" is mostly in french with some spanish so if you don't understand these be sure to get a subtitled version (not dubbed uuugh!)
Thanks in advance,
cpl

Roman Holiday is awesome!
Eurotrip is hilarious. The best part is, shit like that happens. Well, maybe not being taken for the pope, but others. Like dirty sex acts in alleys, etc. hehe. Right? B)

I absolutely loooove L'auberge Espagnole. 'Course, on the sillier side of things, there's National Lampoon's European Vacation. Classic!!

Eurotrip is a total blast - so many funny parts, but one that I really like is that guy in the train..!

There's a travel-related backpacker movie that I really really really really love:
It's a very simple storyline about an Englishwoman and her daughters escaping life in England and moved to Morocco, and their daily adventures there.
This film is wonderful in so many aspects. One is because it simply tells the story of one's life journey in everyday life routine - without the Hollywood melodrama.
Instead, throughout the movie the viewer (i.e. ME) constantly senses an element of potential danger in her lifestyle but without overcooking it, from a director's point of view...if you can get my drift...
It could be said that if one were to film our life's experiences while travelling/living abroad, the film can be very similar to this movie's theme.

And this could very likely be a backpacker's favourite movie (AND book):
May all the devastated souls rest in peace on Phi Phi Island...

I finally saw chasing liberty the other day (not that I was desperate to see it) but overall I thought it was kinda cool.
LOVE the beach.
LOVE National Lampoons EU Vaca
I liked Brokedown Palace but it really scared me in terms of travelling to Thailand, but I got over that when I realized that could happen in any country.

Travel movies and nobody mentions "Monty Python and the Holy Grail?" S
Shit, folks, they travel all over Britain looking for the bloody thing, from the mud harvesting fields, through bucolic towns, enchanted woods filled with Knights Who Say Ni, the Swamp Castle, the Bridge of Death, Castle Anthrax, the cottage of the old man in scene 24, to the Castle Auuuuuuggggggghhhhhh, which I think is somewhere in France...
:D
