As some of you know I worked very little last week and spent a lot of that time in the chat room and such. Today I got sent home form work at 10a.m. cause there was nothing to do. I just got a call that I have to drive back out there for an "important" meeting. Normally since I drive 25 miles each way they just ramble whatever message to me. So since I have to be present what do you all think? Am I getting laid off for the rest of the year? What should I do with my new found time? Thanks for the help y'all.

When will you know what the news is for sure? Anyway, I really hope you're not laid off!

If that is the case, though, you can book one of those crazy last-minute holidy specials somewhere and relax and think about what to do next with a clear mind...

Wow. I hope you don't get laid off, man! Unless that would be a good thing?! I'd be suspicious of the "important" meeting as well.

getting laid off fucking sucks and can be scary - but you'll be fine.

i have a feeling it's karmically owed you.

good luck whatever though!

I doubt it. Why go thru all the hoopla or need to hide it? If they were gonna lay you off, they'd just call you in and do it. Usually happens on Fri's too.

well I have been officially laid off. GM decided they needed to do cost cuts and so our facility was sh!t canned.

To quote "Office Space"

Well, time to file for unemployment. hoorah! maybe I can get an unemployment check by christmas. I always planned on being retired by 25 Anyone want to hire me?

Hmm.. maybe you can go to Ford and Chrysler and sell them all of GM's secrets.

"Pssst! The GTO's Australian. The Chevys are made by Daewoo!" That's money right there.

Ah, sorry to hear that. Well, if it was the whole site, at least it was nothing personal and you will now get to enjoy a nice paid-break with your severance package!

Um Hey,
Isnt the rule if you get laid off you always find something better, or is that too optimistic? As a side note
i also indirectly work for GM. but i'm a driveability tech at a cadillac dealer, its also lay off time as we are slow.

i hate the waiting to find out if it's you or not dont you?

Good luck with the job hunting. I'm sure you'll be working sooner than you want to be. Heh.

Yours

Hey, whats say if i get the axe we go on one of those epic
journeys without a direction or money?

Wow, sorry to hear that, Rob. Your field seems to be pretty prone to that kind of thing, now...any chance of using your skills elsewhere? Something that doesn't involve the auto industry? Like the airlines, they're in a definite downturn...and for someone who is as young as your are, you don't have the "seniority" to survive in a layoff-plagued industry.

Time to strike off in a new direction, is my advice...you don't want to be going thru the same crap again when you're in your 30s and 40s...

Well... I pretty much have experience in automotive testing and retail. But I actually signed up for truck driving school, we will see if they will let my driving record pass. I always thought that would be a cool job to have for a year or two, and I can actually make a decent wage. So maybe that will work out. Otherwise there weren't very many jobs out there in my wonderful state. (not that it was a surprise, I am sure my gov. is convincing more companies to flee). So that leaves the possibility of moving somewhere. Or I guess I may have to hone my poker skills enough to win.

The last time I got laid off I had a 2nd job at the time so I was kind of glad, cause i got free time and some unemployment (what they called underemployment). But this time I have kind of sat here and it hasn't really sunk in yet. It was so strange not going to work today. It's so strange knowing I am never going back, well except for thursday to get my final check.

I too think that things happen for a reason, but sometimes they don't seem to be good reasons. All I can say is this was probably the absolute worse time to get laid off. Plus I was sick as hell yesterday, and I couldn't get the fever to break for shit. I went to bed at 8 and it felt like i was asleep for hours and hours and i woke up at 10, went back to bed, woke up at 11, 1, 3, finally the fever broke and I got up at 5. I applied for jobs this morning. As much as I want to work, I don't want to make less then I do on unemployment. We will see...

I think the reason (for "bad shyt" happening) may often be to force you to make a positive change in your life. Kinda like the pain you feel when you stick your hand in a flame. So no, it may not be "good" in itself - but it could spur you onto bigger and better things in the larger picture.
Well, hang in there, bro - good luck! B)
