arrested for a DUI
So here's my last 24 hours:
(and I just want to say that I thought of you Laura *simply angelic*, and I wish that she had been there beforehand.)
So I had some drinks, took a wrong turn and got busted by the cops. I did the Breath-O-Lizer and failed it. I was handcuffed, and brought to jail. They stuffed me in a tiny cell with yellow bricks and a chain tied to the wall. They decide to not press charges because it was my first offense, and I was just over the legal limit by a little.
Buttttt.... my car is impounded, and they can't release it to me, cuz it needs to be the owner: my mom. So yeah, my mom is in Hong Kong for a trip right now (my parents live in Toronto), and this means that I will have to TELL HER when she gets back that: first, I took the car to Ottawa (which they would be pissed enough over), and second, that I got a DUI and have her release the car from the Ottawa Police. SO yeah, she's gonna kick my assssssss...
Learned my fucking lesson.

I probably should've gotten pulled over Thursday myself. Thankfully I didn't.
U.S. cops would be so kind to let me go that's for sure.

Karma man, karma. I'm glad you got caught if you seriously learned your lesson. It could have been so much worse. Drinking and driving is SO not cool.
haha it made me laugh that you remembered how anti-drinking and driving I am though. That's pretty awesome. But seriously kids, don't do it. It's not worth it.

went through a similar situation over the summer, and it was no joke. it hurts the wallet big time. BIG TIME. I still have a suspended liscense and a probation officer. this is a lot for the girl who won the 8th grade spelling bee and has never had even detention in her life and the first run in with the fuzz was THAT.
I feel ya man, but hopefully you've learned yuor lesson, I know I fucking did.

Don't want to sound harsh, but it amazes me that in this day and age, people still think "ahh, I'll be alright to drive, it's not far/I haven't had that much".
Just don't do it!!
(But I hope you get your car back... but don't do it again!)

^yeah I know. sober you're like "oh I know when I'd be fine and when I wouldn't be" but then add about 5 beers or so and you can still conduct business and your inhibitions are lower, it just happens.
I had to go to a DUI class that was like all these orgs came together to teach you about the DUI and the worst was like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) and they get up there and tell you stories that make you thankful that you never hurt anyone. the MADD program combined with the hefty fines (getting my car out of the impound lot was $375) was a big eye opener. they do this thing in class where you add up all the fines you had to pay, anythign that cost anything, wages lost from work, etc, and divided by the # of drinks you had to figure out how much each drink cost the night it happened. INSANE.
I was in class with this 54 year old women who was in for her 2nd DUI, had like 8 beers and 16 shots of jager (I'm not exaggerating) and slammed her car into a guard rail on the interstate in a blackout. that kind of thing is so scary. she blew a .268..................... I couldn't even deal with it.
I was glad for the education versus the 3 days in jail. I think a lot of times states do not care about educating you to make sure it doesn't happen again, they would just rather generate revenue off of you. After mine happened I was really scared and didn't drink for several months. I just couldn't get over the fact that I could have run over a kid or something and I would have ruined some family's life not to mention my own. I have since then learned that I'm not an alcoholic and that I am capable of making better decisions and now have a plan before I go out, give my keys away, always have cash in my wallet for a cab, etc.
DUI...not the one.

thanks for the support tpunks... and I'm glad that some of you have gone through this too... (not glad, but thankful that there are ppl like myself who do stupid shit also).
Yeah I got off pretty lucky, since I was just a little but clearly over .8 (the legal limit) but they didn't press charges. I don't have to go to court.
Now I think I should speak to some legal person... just in case...

Another threadjack...I had to go for jury duty today. I was #23 of 23 for selection of a 6 person jury so I didn't even come close to getting selected. But it was for a DUI trial and it was kind of interested to hear all the questions from the lawyers because you get an idea of what kind of things they want to argue (what's the definition of impaired, what it means if someone refuses the field test halfway through, etc). But I have to say, the 3 ADAs were all incredibly hot! I was having trouble even paying attention to what they were saying.
I really wanted to snap a picture with my cell phone for evidence but I thought the judge might get pissed off at that

Wow, ye get off really lightly with drink driving. If your over the limit here your licence is gone for 3 years and you have to pay a fine of something like €3000. I suppose with our roads being so poor and us being a nation of drunks they had to come down hard on it. I did it once never again, it's just not worth the risk here anymore.
I would have thought ye'd get worse punishments in America seeing as ye have such a good system for learning to drive. Over here you used to get a provisional licence first that let you drive (no lessons necessary) unaccompanied. Sure I failed my driving test the first time around and hoped back in my car and drove home, the best thing about the pro.licencewas it only lasted 3 years but once you atempted the test you could get another one. Although they've closed those loop holes since I did the test.

Kind of OT, but in Canada, at least in BC/Vancouver, the licensing system is too easy. Nobody here can drive worth a crap and you can witness this by just driving to the store. The punishment for DUI isn't as bad as it could be.
Our punishment should be similar to that of Ireland. 10k fine, loose your license for five years, and have your vehicle impounded until you are able to drive again. Not your car? Tough luck.. I've been guilty, but I know better now.

In the US, first time offenders get the worst of it, and if you're a multiple offender it gets less and less severe which doesn't make sense. I was in a car yesterday with a girl in one of my study groups who has a breathalyzer in her fucking car after getting just one.

I think the disparity in sentencing comes from many first time offenders not knowing what steps to take in order to negotiate a more lenient sentence. On the other hand, most repeat offenders are intimately familiar with DUI law.
I can make the following assumptions based upon your friend's story: First, she breathalyzed. Second, her results were pretty high. Ohio gives higher punishments based upon higher BAC levels. Ohio also reserves the right the install an interlock (breathalyzer) device at any time. She gave them her BAC and they used it to bring down the hammer on her.

Good news: I got my car back (FINALLY) after an impressive $197.97 fee for having my car impouned for a week.
I now have only 3 tickets to fight or somehow try to get them to NOT charge demirit points...
And in Canada, it gets worse after your first DUI. I think second time is jail!

Not to be the drunk driver's advocate but "I haven't had that much" is a valid reason for driving. Everytime I go out to dinner I usually have a beer or two, and I drive home afterwards (usually at least 90 minutes later). Most charts say I full metabolize one drink an hour (which feels about right). I have blown a 0.08 at the Great American Beer Festival so I know what that feels like and I am never that bad.
The most dangerous thing I EVER did was drive when I had been up for 32 hours. I was in a double left turn lane and made a U-turn from the right most turn lane across the other left lane.
Don't drive when you are tired!
