rawrrrrr!!
sigh.
so okay, I might be one of the most anal retentive/OCD folks out there. I have one little 4gb flash drive and pretty much my whole life is on there. I have an excel spreadsheet for EVERYTHING. I balance my checkbook on excel, I put school schedules, I plan, I do travel stuff, all on excel. OCD, I promise.
I have a nice 5-speadsheet excel file for my europe trip, spreadsheet 1 being the overview, one sheet being lodging, one sheet being finances, one sheet being transportation (as in trains, flight numbers, any organized aiport pickups, etc), one sheet being plans as far as organized tours, just a basic itenerary for each place I'm going to, with the "must do's" of each city (every city I do a must-do list, basically those are things I have to do and if I do nothing else I'll leave happy), etc.
Well I also used this flash drive when I was deployed. Except they discovered that a virus was on the network in Afhganistan and my flash drive got COMPLETELY wiped.
all those hours of research, going through old emails to get flight times, etc, all down the toilet.
I know I'm supposed to back up but my PC shit the bed (most likely from the same damn virus) and I have this Mac now and I hadn't transferred over yet. And now I never will!
There was also a lot of personal travel research on there which I won't get back, some writing and some other shit.
I want to cry.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Stupid viruses. Hopefully it will come back to you and be faster when doing it the second time around.
This is a good lesson for all of us. Things like this happen.

I have spreadsheets for everything too, but they're all online with Google Docs so they're backed up. Also, this way I can update them from my work computer, home computer, on the road, etc. Plus I keep printouts. It sucks to re-type everything but I've had so many computer problems I've learned.
You can also use TripIt.com to keep track of itineraries, flight/hotel confirmations, and the like. Its actually a nifty application.
sorry about all your stuff though...

Sorry to hear that, I know I have a external harddrive with tons and tons of media that if I lost, would be irreplaceable.
Having an online storage database helps as well, we get one for free via BSU called ilocker. I know these exist for free elsewhere, but I couldn't tell you where off the top of my head.

That BLOWS. But I agree - Google Docs is spectacular. I do a lot of work now at home, and I'm sick of emailing documents to myself. I also have a Maxtor One Touch or something that you just press one button and it backs up docs, music, and photos (or whatever else you program it to).
My Dad bought it for me after I gave my Macbook a bath and lost all my traveling pics (gotta shell out for Snapfish photo CDs now...).

I'm sorry to hear that.
Do you happen to still have that drive with you?
I'm a bit of a computer geek and at one time I also lost some stuff on my USB drive. Anyways, depending on the type of virus you might still have a slight chance of still having you info on there...just not visible because of broken links in the File Allocation Table.
There's programs out there that can retrieve deleted files and such. You might want to try that just in case there's that low percentage chance your stuff is still there...but don't get your hopes up.
Personally I use PC Inspector File Recovery, but you can find others out there.
I'm hoping that helps but odds aren't in your favor.
Good luck!
Yay, first post. hehe
