As travellers we are always asked the same questions..."why do you travel for so long", "arent u scared to go alone", "Don't u miss home"..With those questions i have learned that some people prefer not to travel. They like the comfort of their bed and want to stay confined within the their city limits. But I have realized that travelling to me is escaping. I am so sick and tired of running into people that I know. I workout at the local gym by my house and every day that i go there I run into someone that I either went to school with or that I work with. Last week I ran into seven people that I knew all from highschool. It was like a mini freakin reunion. And then you have these pathetic conversations. "hi how are you!", "what are u doing now?, school/work?" and then of course you go "We should get together for coffee and catch up on old times" and then of course that almost never happens. I don't know I just want to go somewhere where nobody knows me. I don;t want to have those conversations anymore. So that's why I like to travel. I want to be the girl that nobody knows.

i want to travel becuase I have no idea where i want to be or what i want to do. I am tired of sitting around waiting for it to become clear. It is time to go out and look for it......while my travels may not take me to the exact time and place I believe they will bring me a new way of seeing things. thus the life i desire will become clear.......and if that does not happen, i can say to the average person "hey man, i backpacked through Europe, smoked in A-Dam, drank in Brussels, wrote in a park in Berlin...what have you done?" Of course I am a rookie, first trip this spring.......but i like knowing i am going to come oput of it with something. Which i will.

I hear ya all...

Friends/Family/Pets & whatever else, however great they are, and how much you love them, can ultimately be the ones that are holding you back from doing what you truely desire to do.

I think i remember a quote from fight club (a awsome movie), something like 'things you own, end up owning you'.

I dont know how that fits in with what im trying to say, but ive just always liked that quote for some reason.

So yeah, anyrate, im travelling because i want to grow as a person. I just find that when life becomes easy and is no longer a challenge you might as well be dead. I want to find my weaknesses and improve. My struggles will develop my strengths.

So as someone once said, 'Throw yourself into the open sea, be confident that no shark will be more lethal than the dangers of settling for stagnation and conventionality.

Sorry to go on

Nice topic, Dio...

I guess for me travel is less soul searching or personal growth and more about boundless curiousity. I want to see the world. When I read about a place that interests me, I want to SEE it. I can't imagine sitting by a fireplace when I'm 70, thinking, "Well, I never DID see Europe, or the Pyramids, or the African savannah, the Arctic, a floating market in Asia, a Buddhist temple at sunrise...

There are just too many experiences, too many rich sights, too many interesting cultures for me to imagine not traveling. God created this big, wild world with all kinds of wonderful stuff, how can you sit at home in front of your TV watching reruns?

I guess I have the hardest time fathoming people who DON'T want to travel...

i don't feel a need to find myself or anything, i just want to be able to travel because i can, get up and go just see things, i don't want to get so scared that i end up working in a job that i don't enjoy, but i do for the money, want to do something that i can say is mine and no-one elses, i mean even if i travel in a group, we all take different things away and leave different things from the trip,

i dont wanna be trapped, i don't want a routine, i just want to travel because all i want is to feed this curiosity i've got so there u have it,

i'll think some more as some teacher is rambling on about pie, and the resistance of some crappy wire

For me I just want to see and do everything there is to do. I'm young and have no one holding me back. So i'm jsut going to go and have fun and see everything. I also at times like being places where no one knows me. I also can't sit still for long.

I feel the same way as WWM. I just want to SEE everything out there and experience it for myself. I honestly can't imagine NOT wanting to see the world, but there are a lot of people who have no interest in leaving their 20-mile-radius.

my god, i totally agree with everything everyone has said up til now! haha, its nice to find so many people that are like you, huh? well yeah, i am travelling, because i just want to GET AWAY. I go to university right now in the town i grew up in and i'm constantly running into people who I kind of know from back in the day, but i don't really want to talk to them at all...but like you said dio, you always just get into those lame conversations...and often you wonder whether the same person feels the same about you, so why do you bother chit-chatting. i want to get out there... there is too much to see for me to travel.

I can't afford NOT to travel!

Totally agreed. Reading, seeing and EXPERIENCING are totally different things! Each is not a substitute for the former. My whole attitude towards America and the rest of the world has changed a lot after travelling. It's really been enlightening and enjoyable. I've learned so many things you just can't read about in books, here. And met lots of really great, fun people! I just love bustin' out of our media bubble, pop/mall culture and rather closed mentality here to trip the light fantastic, har har!

here on the Isle of man its like twenty years behind the rest of the uk, no one wants to travel, it totaly sucks, and bein a small island its quite a 'close' community, cause no-one travels or leaves (i'm not born there)

100 years ago manx fishermen actualy used to kidnap young men from scotland wales ireland and england, to marry there daughters, cause of the 'close family ties' u could say

OHOHOH and another reason i wanna travel, if i see other places i mite appreciate IoM more, and i can quit whinning

voyed: wot opinions did u have, and wot opinions do u have now?

I completely agree with whoever said that their friends and family (however well meaning) tend to stifle. I really want to travel to experience things, but also to get away from a mom who (though I love her to death) is completely paranoid and will probably want my itinerary set in stone and all of the phone numbers. Which is why my dad is the one I go to for travel advice. I really would like to see what I can deal with if I have to, and I think that you are more likely to react to new places in a real way if you aren't around people with preconcieved notions about you. I think alot for me it is wanting to be able to start over, but not being able to do that until I know what I want to start over as, and I find travel, no matter how small, helps define that.

Dio you probably shouldn't watch 'Cheers' right about now...or at least the start.

WWM said it all. And if I 'find my self', so to speak, along the way then so be it.

Gah.
WWM, now you've given me even more ideas for things to see (i was still only thinking about europe).
Eventually, i'd like to see it all - so much to see, so little time (is one lifetime really enough ?).

I used to tell people, Wyzfen, that I wanted to walk every square inch of the world.

I don't think I've walked every square inch of my house...

Personally I just want a get away from the reality of life. A fantasy world where there's no work, no responsibility just good times. Where everything is new and exciting. No bosses, no scheduals.........aaaahhhh I can't wait much longer (how can you tell I'm at work ).

I'd have to agree with Voyd. The way I see it, you can't really consider yourself an educated person unless you have first hand experience. I can read endless books about WW2 or other important events, but without actually seeing in person the places where these events unfolded, my perspective is going to be incomplete. I don't like the feeling that I am not getting the full perspective on something. The European mentality toward things is different from what we have here in the US (from what I've heard, I have yet to see this for myself), and I would like to understand just why that is. Whether this will be possible from one summer of backpacking I have no idea, but at least its a start.

I love to see new places, meet new people, learn new ways of life. Get away from my world for a little bit. Even a weekend trip is a great way to refresh myself. Being somewhere I am not that familiar with for a few days is a great rejuvenator.

That quote from Fight club is right, "The things we own, end up owning us." basically about how in America we are a materialistic country. We pride ourselves on what it is we own, as opposed to who it is we are. I think Fight Club is an excellent look into American psyche, especially a lot of the modern male population. I can agree with another line in there, "We are a generation of men raised by women, i don't know if another woman is what we really need." As great as women are, I've spent my whole life living with my mother, and sometimes it just seems too much. but that is off topic (bad Rob) Yeah, so new people, places, lifestyles. Yeah, and I like to take pictures of anything I can see... keeps the memories alive!

I agree wholeheartedly with all of you, especially Dio's original sentiments. After being in the same place for even a year, I always yearn for that wide-open feeling...

where

I am a stranger
no-one knows me
there is no history!
there are no assumptions
there is endless, boundless potential B)
in general I'm opened up and all my preconceptions are poured right out of me and EVERYTHING is CRYSTAL CLEAR!

Anyone feel that gorgeousness too?

mmm. freedom.

I just wish that I could experience that soaring feeling more often when I am in 'nesting' mode...I suspect it's really an inner thing that is just made sharper and more tangible by being 'out there' in the world...hmm

So I travel to taste life in its sharpest resolution, 'running to' and yepyep sometimes that means running away

And I like to think I don't just wander, but try to give something back to the people and the places that have given me the inestimable gift of inspiration/reassurance/beauty.

HEY DIO: THANKS FOR POSTING THIS. Oooh I feel so warm n fuzzy

I love adventure... and being able to just be somewhere that i've never seen and have to find my way around and be independent. And being by myself makes me meet new people and if I want to see or do something, I do it... no one holding me back.. but mainly it's about the Adventure... and taking myself out of my comfort zone... ( I always figured I'd be a good Indiana Jones... gotta work on my whip skills though )
