playing cards!
okay so I just got done having a sa-weet card playing marathon with some of my roommates today. I learned some fun new games and taught some fun games, and it made me realize that people from differemt parts of the country know all these different card games. for example, someone told me euchre is a midwest thing or something.
so it made me wonder what kind of card games everyone else plays regularly or if some of ya'll even play cards regularly. that's how my family bonds is over cards. my uncle was a poke dealer in vegas for 15 years so I've known how to play poker since age 6 (though I have no idea how to play texas hold 'em or anything), and I have made some money playing blackjack in vegas the times I've been. my grandma taught me how to play canasta when I was pretty young so I rock at that and am addicted. I know it's an old people's card game but I love it anyway haha.
lets see, what else... rummy & gin, and I JUST learned how to play spades and I am okay at it. and then of course, euchre.
always wanted to learn bridge but it seems so complicated.
and then don't even get me started on the card drinking games... asshole, fuck the dealer, kings (favorite game ever), etc.
anyway yeah. good shit.

Gin and Rummy here, along with the random oldschool boardgame. Trivia Pursuit (any of them) rock, etc.... Its funny, Rox and I just had my parents over for dinner and cards last night. Still trying to get them to be OK with the cross country move

My family LOVES Euchre. My dad drives everyone nuts the way he plays...and he wins a lot of the time (calling trump with only the 9 & 10 - argh)! We played rummy a lot when we were kids. Spades & Hearts are fun too. I don't play poker well. I know the basics, but that's it. Ratscrew was another card game we played a lot in school.

oh how i loved egyptian ratscrew! Thanks for reminding me... that game was wicked. My favorite thing to do was to slap in on a game already in progress and end up winning! Made everyone mad!

Definitely Euchre, and poker (texas hold'em. omaha, pineapple (regular and crazy), 5 card draw, 7 card stud, razz, kansas city low ball, cincinatti), rummy, gin, gin rummy, besta (an italian game played with an italian deck), kronk <sp> (an urban card game, a little fuzzy on the rules even right now), spades, hearts...
I love card games...

The only card games I play these days are the odd texas hold'em games with family and friends. I started playing online too, so far I've managed to make €60 last 2 months (I've been trying to play my way back up from €10 as I'm assuming that's the best way. To work my way up through the small tables.
I play 25 the odd time. The only other game I remember playing when I was younger is begga my neighbour but I can't remember the rules.

you know as far as magic goes, I knew some guys who played and I watched and never got it but I was always interested.
also, don't know if this counts, but my grandma and her sister used to take me and my cousin to go play bingo with them on wednesdays at the vfw or something (which I can be a member of when I get back, and drink for cheap!!! hahahahaha), but yeah that was awesome.
most people dread getting old, but I have a whole retirement plan worked out. I am going to move to palm beach or sarasota (or somewhere there are a lot of other old people), and I will spend my days playing bingo, cards, and shuffleboard, wearing ridiculous hats, and drinking gin and tonics. it's going to be great.

I played magic once with a friend in middle school. He gave me a starter deck then kicked my ass with his special custom built deck so it didn't seem very fun.
I can be a total nerd about that kind of stuff, so it's probably a good thing, saved me lots of time and money! There are so many other trading card games now too, it could get seriously addictive...

I can be too when it comes to certain stuff -- total GEEK. no shame though. my little sister got into the whole pokemon thing when she was younger and the local barnes and noble had tournaments in the cafe and she went once and I never let it go. until she reminded me of my total nerd-like antics and I shut right up....

are you calling me a nerd? I sold my Time Walk (this is not going good... totally ruining my cool joe reputation with the T-punk ladies) for $450 back in May. I once had a deck that was valued at $1200.
For those staring blankly at the post saying, "what the hell is a Time Walk?" Let me prove my dorkiness. Time Walk is a Magic Card that was printed in the Alpha/Beta/Unlimited Sets. I had an Unlimited Time Walk. Unlimited was the first major release set they had. Time Walk is considered a Power 9 Card, which means it was a very powerful, cheap to cast, card that they no longer printed after the Unlimited set. Time walk (1 blue, 1 colorless mana) mana is energy, you use it to cast spells. Text reads: "Take Another Turn After This One". Simple but powerful. Through various card combos you could get say... 7 to 9 turns in a row.
(guess I won't be getting laid anytime soon )

repeat after me: there's no shame in my game!
I believe somewhere on here, after confessing my undying fandom to Celine Dion on here, someone told me to "wave my freak flag with pride". so I do. hehe. no shame!!
anyhoo, as for cards, I think I need to learn how to play "hold em" because that seems to be the big thing lately. there's a bar in fayetteville that I went to with one of my friends who plays in a hold 'em tournament every week, so I went with him and he tried to teach me but I just couldn't get it haha.

Hold 'em is really easy. If you know how to play poker, you're 80% there. The only difference is that you get 2 cards instead of 5 and then you share the 5 cards in the centre with the rest of the players at your table.
You're dealt your 2 cards. There's 3 chips called dealer (obv as to what this means), big blind and small blind. Before each game you set the amount that the big and small blind have to pay. So basically before you know which cards are going to be dealt you automatically have to pay a certain amount like 5$ for small blind & 10$ for big blind, just to get the pot rolling. Then you can fold, or call (the big blind amount), or raise just like with normal poker. Each hand those 3 chips rotate around the circle so everyone gets them a few times.
Then 3 cards are placed in the centre, you bet, another card, you bet, and finally the 5th card & then you bet. The person who can make the highest poker hand with the cards in the centre and their personal 2 cards wins.

And Sij, I love how you went into all that detail with your magic card....brings back memories, although I really dont care about the value of my cards, simply whether or not they'll make me win

now that I read it out, it doesn't sound difficult at all. when they were trying to explain it to me at the tournament I was at, I was like "what the hell?" but that sounds pretty easy. maybe I'll go on yahoo games and play some. thanks!! :D
