Default Ryanair: €10 flights between Europe and the US

I couldn't find me old post about the Atlantic routes being opened up to new airlines.

Michael O'Leary has come out with Ryanairs plans for the US market, he plans to sell economy seats for €10 or $10 depending on which way your going.

http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0412/ryanair.html

http://www.examiner.ie/irishexaminer...288-qqqx=1.asp

Quote:
Mr O’Leary said that the new service would operate a “hybrid” business model which would see 60% of seating devoted to economy class and 40% at a premium service. The premium service — which would include flat-bed style seating, showers and luxury lounges — will probably cost around €5,000 per return ticket.
Who in the name of God would pay €5000 for a plane ticket?

yeah it was on the second page of the paper here this morning. they'll probably charge for any baggage over 20 kilos and and leave at three in the morning though...

That's because they adhere to travelpunk recommendations, pack light and travel at night. :D

It'd be an uncomfortable 6 hours, but for about $100-$150 each way (taxes and fees included), I'd fly RyanAir - as long as the legacy carriers weren't at least somewhat competitive (such as $175 each way).

As for who would pay 5,000 for a ticket - I know a number of people who buy full-fare business and sometimes first class tickets...and those can easily run into the thousands of dollars. Of course, I would never do that haha...at least not at this financial point in my life!

I'll never fly with them - you'll prob find that the seats wont recline and you'll have to buy food and drinks. Screw them and their cheap ass ways!

If i can handle 6 hours on dirt roads on a bus rediculously hung over, with no bathrooms, and one stop to buy overinflated priced beer and water, I can handle 8 hours across the pond on RyanAir. 'Specially if it causes the big boys to become more competitive.

I was just thinking that. However I travel, my goal once I get there is to change clothes once a month and carry my own toilet paper, so I can rough it for a flight. I think worse than Ryan's "economy" style is when you pay big bucks for a "legit" carrier and they screw you anyway. Happens quite a bit, doesn't it?

You could also try www.flyzoom.com as they have just launched flights from new york to london for relatively cheap prices and they do have reclining chairs with a free meal and soft drinks and not the anticipated 4 year wait for a ticket with ryanair

Zoom appears to be about 200 bucks cheaper during the summer than their closest competitor. Since I have never paid for a summer ticket to Europe I didn't realize the price differential between January - April and July.

Yeah, sadly, thats the price to pay for having warmer weather while traveling. Bummer

Plus, they are not allowing US departures. Another Bummer. They did say on the site to check back in a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will get the red tape bullshit done soon

$5000 is nothing...i get free business tickets each year to see my dad of his work, and one year my ticket cost £5,500. thats around $1100 i think. disguiting money.

when i travel the cheapest way is the best way. fuck all the extras - take food on with ya! take some valium and you pass out upright no problem
its really wierd, all the long haul flights i do are business (to kl and back) which is amazing luxury, then i fly around asia in hardcore economy, its a bit weird adjusting. business class is cool for gettin a bed and sleeping but its always air conned to fuck and everyone is really quiet and posh. i kinda like the rabble in economy, ive met some wicked people flying!! not in business though

I have flown Business and Economy and there is just no comparison it usually is just not worth the price difference. One time my dad used some miles to upgrade my ticket on the return leg, the other, we got bumped because the lady behind the desk felt sorry for us that we slept in an airport the night before.

Interestingly enough, I slept in the airport the first time around too

Btw, Sarah, you are off by an order of magnitude, the ticket is $11000 USD which is more than my I spent going to Europe...twice (3months total)...including airfare, railpass, schooling, accomodation, food and what I will spend on going to Japan in three weeks.

yeah its proper rediculous. i only fly business cos my dads company pay for me!!!! its something ive never experienced, im poor and proud, whenever i go to check in to the business lounge (to rinse the nice food and booze) they always look at me like im lost. pull out my ticket and they always seem a bit confused, like how has this tramp got 5k. business class is well funny, everyone is posh and they have funny posh aceents (the english ones) it amuses me no end.

my free flights run out next summer :'( 2 more business flights left to malaysia. then i have to pay my (economy) way!!

i dont see why people would spend 5k on a plane ticket - if i was paying id rather pay £400 and buy some hardcore sleeping pills. i could never afford a ticket to malaysia on my own, let alone business class!!

i went in first class once (upgrade!!) and it was insane. i didnt want to touch anythin in case i broke it. and there was some famous USA rapper on there, i dunno who he was though cos i think rap is shit but he was laughing at me cos he knew i didnt have a clue

I don't think I've ever paid more than €150 for a ticket, the time I went to the states it was on the companys time and we still flew economy. I wonder would all those business class folks pay that kind of money if it was coming out of their own pockets?

i often wonder that. my dad never used to buy business class 10 or so yearsw ago (he could afford it) but now he has racked up so many airmiles whenever he files for leisure its in business or first. alright for some!

although ive racked up a fair few airmiles too...going to use them when when me free flights run out and i have an urge to travel

as far as Zoom is concerned, I checked some toronto-london prices and they were cheap, but still not as cheap as travelcuts. If you are a student in canada, check out travel cuts, they give you a student discount that gives you the cheapest fairs i've ever seen. also sometimes they have radtarded deals from toronto/montreal to europe, i saw toronto-london for $98, however it was last minute and it was very particular going and returning dates. but in that case, if they departing date works for you, its only $98 so can totally blow off the return date and just buy a cheap one-way when it suits you.

I would rather pay the extra to be honest. I'm not rich by an means but the choice of paying ryan air or a more customer friendly airline is a easy and worthy choice to make.

Plus airmiles rock! I'm sitting at 100k (enough for a return ticket to japan and another to anywhere in the US) just a shame I have to wait unti next year to use them!

^you're a masochist

there's also a lcc flying out of the east coast and canada called globespan. from boston they only fly to glasgow ($99 o/w +taxes) and an airport in ireland called knock west (which i hadn't heard of before.)

you can check them out at www.flyglobespan.com seems like they're pretty bare bones but you can always upgrade to their premium economy serive which seems comparable to world traveller on ba.

(complete sidenote)i upgraded to ba's world travller plus (wt+) on my last trip to heathrow. well well worth the couple of hundred buck it cost. felt much more like a business class than coach, plus i got a bulkhead seat which greatly helped.

I'm actually flying Globespan to London from YVR in Sept. I've never used them, but my dad and his wife have a few times. No frills, but not crap either... I didn't pay for the ticket, so I can deal.
