hi guys - i'm feeling a bit bummed out right now... it's silly, but... of course, we all feel a little travel withdrawal when we're not actually traveling, and our bodies start to ache for it, so to say...

well, i just finished chatting with this guy i met in barcelona (he lives there), we had a great time!... and we're good friends now... well, i know it's hard to read people during chatting sometimes, but i felt confident, the same towards him, but he started saying that i sounded distracted, far away, colder (he may not have used this word), and finally 'americanized'...

well, besides the fact that i resent the negative association w/ americanization, that's a whole other subject, i'm just a bit bummed out, b/c I think it's unfair to use the fact that we're back home against us... do you know what i mean?

well, this is silly, everything is fine b/w my friend and i, we'll be chatting again soon, this probably has more to do w/ my desire to be travelling again than anything...

save some more money n go travelling again!!

in my experience travelling has a weird effect on people - it can change people very dramatically in a short period of time. peoples outlook on life changes when they expereince new things, and when you get back home, its all just as you left it and can take a while to accustomize yourself back into your old life.

you probably have got post holiday blues though. Ive had them for about 3 months now - cant wait to get back on a plane, and get the f*** outta dodge!

Thanks guys, that's true, even though I didn't feel I was any different talking to my friend, he probably felt that I was compared to how I might have been while with him in Barcelona. Not that I'm a totally different person now, but like you guys said, the travel probably did have a dramatic impact on me, and being back home for 2 months is probably wearing that off a little bit... something to think about... you guys are great!

I think we ALL change a at least a little when we travel. How could we not? I mean we're surrounded by new people, new landscapes, new food etc... I'm not talking about doing a 180, but some people are a little more reflective, or more outgoing..

Were u talking to this guy on the phone? mabye it's just that. I mean all this time he has been talking to you face to face and obviously your going to portray a different kind of person when your thousands of kilometres away talking on a phone. It wouldn't be as personal.

And finally YES you've been freakin home for two months! duh of course your sad. take care and keep your chin up!

hey carisia, i think the guys have nailed it..
i just got back from my first backpacking trip to AU...
i'm keeping in touch thru mail and phone with a few people whom i managed to establish a good friendship with.. it's just not the same as being with them in person.. you know, up close and personal...

and yes indeed, travelling has a weird effect on people.. it will definitely change you for the better...and i believe it is the BEST TEACHER!!!! the recent trip i took has the biggest impact on me.. a good one!! can't wait to be on the road again..

just take it easy and i'm sure everything will be fine in no time..

You guys are awesome! Dio, we were chatting via windows messenger, so definitely, I understand that it's hard to read people that way. anyhoo... need to get back on the road soon! But how do we reconcile that, meaning, our different environments, and the different sides of us that shine through? I've been thinking about what my friend said... the whole 'americanization' thing. I am not one to be attacking Americans, since I am one myself, and I heard plenty of that when I was in Europe... But ever since yesterday morning, I've been giving it some thought, and it's not so much the American culture thing, but it's the "modern" culture thing... The fact that everything is so fast, and thus only skin deep, people's defense mechanisms are high up, and it's really not as easy to relate to people, especially in big cities. Sometimes, it's all about what you do for living, who you know, what you look like, perhaps it's more so here in the East Coast... It's sad, but it's true... That makes me sad... And it makes me miss how things were when I was traveling. I know a lot of that was the openness in me, but it was also the openness and different values and cultures in others too and our surroundings... So the question is... how do we reconcile that? Where I live now, my home, and my community are part of my reality. And eventually, it rubs off on you, the local mentality. How do we live here, but live with the open mindset that we encountered on the road? Is the key to hold tight and travel as much as you can? Or is there a better solution?

wot is americanization? is it capitilsm? the fight for justice and free speech? is it America as a super power? is it america as a democracy? or... is it wot defines a western culture, a consumer culture*, where every body wants sumthing for nothing? thats the trouble britain is having with the Welfare state at the minute, there is quite alot of ill feeling towards ppl on benifits, because ppl see them as 'dregs of society' 'leeches' which is totaly unjustified, but people don't that they should have to pay tax for somthing they don't receive, even thou they r entitled to it, if they should need it, ppl live in a life where its a case of 'i see it, i want it, i have it' which has now overflowed in to politics, which aint to gud i think,

so u just gotta try bein sumone other than the consumers, our lives are very scheulde before u start to travel, so be disorganised, if u got a while of work, along weekend maybe, go on a road trip if u can't travel, there great fun with a mate, knock urself out

*these rheatorical Questions are based on UK and USA
