So every one has that one thing that when they are traveling they just have to get... whether it be food, or a trinket, or any other kind of thing.... They find themselves searching for it. what is yours?

Me I have to always search out and eat the local, traditional food. But my big one is masks. I have a collection. When I went to Venice, l found that at the end of my first day I had spent 60 Euros on masks. so much for me not spending money on frivolous things.


So come on what are yours? What do you have to get?

some sort of local statue/carving. in brazil i got some soapstone carvings and in this island off the coast of mexico i got this wicked green statue (miniature, its about 10 inches tall).. i just cant remember what green guy is made out of...

I like to collect a shot glass from each county I visit. I find this difficult when I visit any Muslim countries and then I get frustrated!

I also like to learn how to properly order a beer in every country.

I always hunt for a patch. My pack is covered with patches from everywhere I have been. Not very easy in smaller cities and countries, but fun to hunt for. I MUST always drink the local beer as well

I always get some small chintzy souvenier that represents the place. I got a cross ornament in Dublin, little glass shoes in Holland, a beer stein in Germany... etc. I like the shot glass and patches idea. Maybe I'll do that when I go back.
But I lov ehaving my journal and paper. I have the coolest stories from my travels.

I have a sweet tooth so Im a sucker for trying junk food esp. chocolate, also my travel diary from japan which (definately a favourite possesion) is full of wrappers, tickets, notes and just anything that captures the experience alongside the stories, so yeh theres another vote for the travel diary!!

Well even though I'm not the most experienced traveller, I always have to have a camera on me. Pictures can tell or capture moments you'll want to remember FOREVER!!!!!! and with my memory I need all the pics I can get. I must be getting old or something anyways... I'd say I need to have a journal as well. I didn't take one on my last trip (the campout), and I really wish I had. Friends always seem to buy me shot glasses when they go away, so I don't need anymore of those, lol. The patches idea sounds cool. Oh and i'm totally up for trying the chocolate in every place I visit.

Pastries with ricotta cheese. These delicious pastries in Italy's pasticerria's became my "thing".
I found its less common to find in the north than the south.

Wall things. Something I can hang up and see every day.

Our house is full of reminders of trips and lives lived abroad...usually paintings by local artists or posters (I have some great Soviet propoganda posters I just love) but more recently I've become enchanted with textiles - I hang kimono and obi on an ugly brick wall in our dining room, changing the pieces with the seasons or my mood.

From Lithuania we got an awesome handworked iron cross like the ones on all the church steeples...it's fairly dramatic in the living room! Fans from Japan and Korea, a Noh mask, old Japanese scroll paintings, koi nobori (the carp streamers flown to celebrate Boy's Day in Japan), embroidered and beaded Indian shawls (which I got in a second hand shop in Vilnius, naturally), ceramic serving platters and tiles...

It's a pretty eclectic collection.
