Seriously, Since friday it seems belfast has become swamped by backpackers! Me and a friend have counted atleast 42 sightings while running around town (saw an american walking with a 90L on his back, with an USA flag stitched to it, and holding a big book with IRELAND on it - priceless! ).
Maybe it's because I'm heading off soon ( ) that has me noticing it more but the lifestyle really does seem to be attracting more and more people every year?!
Any of you guys noticing a increase?
Besides, what the hell is so special about belfast?!

Belfast has gotten much safer over the past decade or so...
Seriously, though, tourism is the worlds number one industry! Backpacking is rapidly growing, and people are finding that for a little less creature comforts, you can stretch your travel dollar (or euro or dinar or lire or sheckel) a lot farther...
(though I figure you're just noticing it more now that you're planning your trip!)

Yeah, it's funny how you don't notice things that you don't relate to...I never noticed backpacker hostels in my own city until I started being a travelbug myself, and I definitely notice travelers more nowadays.

Not much to attract people to my town (village - 160 people!), but I did notice a fair few around Belgium a week or so ago.

Although San Francisco's a popular destination and there are lots of hostels about, I don't really notice the large numbers of backpackers that are supposedly here. I occasionally run into groups of Irish chicks (god bless 'em) or Aussie guys at bars, but none that stick out like a sore thumb or anything.

Travelchick, what exactly are you going to Belfast for? Studying or just to travel? I know you are taking some time off from school but I wasn't sure.

I don't think i've ever seen any backpackers around here, except the ones i steal from my mate's hostel. You see, i go to the Blue Mountains a fair bit for my motorbike riding and other various outdoor activites and while i'm there i stay at my mate's hostel. Now, at night we hang out with the backpackers and have a few drinks and talk general BS. Every now and again i meet some backpackers that have only been to the main tourist destinations. This bothers me, so i tell them if they wanna see the real crocodile wrestling, kangaroo riding, meat pie eating, drizabone wearing, drought battling, beer guzzling Australians then i'll take them on a country tour for the weekend. Surprisingly, a few have taken me up on the offer and have had an awsome time.
....and that's the story of how backpackers came to my home town.

Sadly, Sacramento isnt really on the international traveller's itinerary. Its a shame too - everyone wants to come to California, but they dont realize that Sacramento was where the gold rush began, which instigated the great westward migration. So historical!

Yeah, Sacramento's actually a pretty interesting place. And backpackers would be in heaven with the free popcorn at the Pine Cove

I think it might all have to do with where you live. I mean, I live in the burbs, no packers whatsoever, at any time. However, around Boston, when I am at work, I will notice people that seem like they are much more commonly.

My town is off the tourist trail in Ireland but we do get the odd tourist passing through but since joining couchsurfers and having them stay with me you can spot the backpacker real easy it's really funny because they stand out like a sore thumb in a small town like this.

I've definately noticed a lot more backpackers around Melbourne since I've been TPunking and planning my trip.
Interesting side note: I now think about Europe more than I think about sex. Incredible but true.
