I thought it was weird that no one mentioned this already. But have you guys seen the mess going on at Heathrow Airport? I'm not gonna blab about the obvious state of worry all those people must be in... just being stuck there at the air port, no chance of going back home/going abroad any time soon, and knowing that today was the day that they almost died...

Instead I'm just gonna complain about how this affects all of us on our future travels. According to the news paper here in Buenos Aires, now you can't board any flights leaving from the UK with a carry on bag. You can only board with a transparent bag with the absolute necesities: documents and prescription glasses, and eventualy baby formula for children. And that's it. No technology devices, not even a cell phone. Those have to be checked in with your luggage.

Oh well... what is the world coming to?

Ugh.

Even with all this knowledge and technology we have, and given the nature of our world..life is more complicated than ever. It's so sad...

i can't imagine it will stick. They came down hard after sept 11th here too and eventually things got lax again. I am sure the same will happen there. There will be way too many complaints.

Are you serious? A clear bag?!?!
And we have to wait and claim the bags now, what if this catches up (it eventually will)?

This really sucks big time dude.

US travel rules via TSA have also changed in response...
Quote:
NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.[/b]

It's a big old pain in the arse, eh?

Thing is, as far as I know, the attacks weren't actually due to be carried out today. So they got the main suspects, but for all we know, there are still a load more people still intending to carry this out.

Just cos they arrested some people, it doesn't mean anything else isn't in the pipeline, so I'm happy that they're upping security. I know it's a real bitch to have to check all your luggage in and only carry on the essentials, but I'd much rather do that than get bombed thank-you-very-much!

I don't know about that, I'm still in shock about no carry-ons! do you know what this could mean for me???? I would lose hours of valuable killer time + gain extra stress just because they want to tight the security a little bit more, I was kinda cool with the "random" shoe search and the non-so idiotic bag search but come on!

Seriously though, if one of your family members was on a flight that got blown up, because someone had smuggled explosives onboard in their contact lense solution bottle, wouldn't you be pretty pissed off at the airline people?

No, I'd be pissed off at our society that allows such killers to develop fucked up ideologies.

Terrorism is a failure of society, not of security. The airports, airlines, and screening staff can only do so much. Anyone bound and determined to cause damage inevitably will.

I wouldn't hate the airlane, I would hate the douchebag that had the sweet idea of making a little bomg and smuggle it where he can hurt people, but answering your question; Depends on which family member other than my sis they can all hop on the plane. If there was no offense ever, no defense would ever be needed.

Well of course you'd be pissed of with the person that did it, that's obvious!

I'm just saying that if it happened to someone I know, I'd be more than a little disgruntled that the airlines had come up with this big security action plan, used it for a minimal amount of time, and then something bad happened once they reverted back to the old way of doing things.

I would be mad at them if the aircraft had an internal issue because of maintance but not because some imbecile had a hot idea.

Granted, but peoples view of world society, including fundamentals, religion, wars, history both past and present and individual extremists, can't be changed overnight. However, security can.

Inevitably though, if something slips by everyone will blame the security infrastructure. If their is not one in place to weed out the potentials though, then it is like opening up the flood gates.

How do you propose to change that? I think until that question is answered, it makes sence from a safety view, to do what they feel they have to do. In this case it is the carry on luggage. I am sure they are not just looking to do this to piss people off and hear complaint after complaint.

This is a classic case of "damned if you do and damned if you don't". We all hate the extra screenings, delays and inconvenience, and are occasionally less than polite about it, but if there WAS an incident, you can bet it would be the airlines that would be bearing the brunt of the criticism - and the lawsuits - not the terrorists or their ideals.

Perhaps if we lived in a less litigious world where common sense and reason prevailed, people would recognize that the nearest wallet to a tragedy is not necessarily responsible for it and such measures wouldn't be necessary but until we do, you can bet the airlines are going to cover the bases. It's possible, even probable, that ethical considerations concerning the safety of the passengers enters into it, but the economic argument alone is sufficient to justify the measures in the eyes of the airlines.

i think that logically this was the best move the airlines could make. i would also not count on airlines "going slack" again... at least not nearly as quickly as before. i've always been one to take as much possible as carry-on, just to avoid checking bags at all, but not having carry-on bags is not going to hinder my desire to travel. sure having your own stock of reading and tunes will make the trip that more luxurious-but sometimes you have to realize that it's not worth more than having the ability to even get on a plane. it's almost like smoking on planes. sure it relieved the stress/passed the time/allowed folks to bring the comfort of land across seas, but in the end it was a hazard to the rest of the passengers whether they admitted it or not. people still complain about the entire not-able-to-smoke thing, but it was unreasonable for the airlines to ban it.

er correction, "wasn't unreasonable"

Hmmm. . . No, I see your point but it goes wayyyyy beyond. A cigar is not the same as a bag, imagine: you will not be able to eat if you do not carry all your items in a clear bag with only the essentials, think of a plane as a Rest. A smoke is not the same as a bag you might need your laptop or mobile, maybe even my fiber capsules oh no I need to show proof! now where the hell am I gonna hide my fun pills!!!
