I saw a flyer up at school and thought someone on the boards might be interested:

American Assistants in France:
The French Ministry of Education offers 1,700 teaching assistantship positions in French primary & secondary schools to American citizens, between 20 and 30 years of age, graduates or undergraduates with a proficiency in French.

deadlines: December 1, 2005, January 1, 2006, February 1, 2006
tasks: English conversation classes 12 hours a week
monthly stipend: 750 euros

I met a few people who'd done this while in France, and they loved it...

Only thing is 750€/month doesn't get you much, so you can't be in a big city - best to be in a small, rural area, where you'll likely find a family that'll board you for the experience of having a native English speaker. You get the benefit of being VERY well immersed in France, and you could make weekend trips to bigger cities to party.

As far as the French proficiency goes, I believe they just require that you've at least taken (or are taking) a French class, and that your teacher/professor can sign off that you are/were a student. At least, that was the requirement when I was looking at the program.

So yeah, the pay blows, but from the folks I met, the benefits way outweigh it. They all spoke fluent French after a couple of months, sounding totally native, and got to eat great food, drink tons of wine, and have a blast teaching English to local folk. Sounds good to me!
