Hey everyone & anyone

I've just joined the boards...Looking for some info on Denmark in summer, good places to stay, things to see, things to avoid etc etc. Thinking of spending a couple of weeks there but been told its majorly expensive? Was looking at the eurail pass...Scanrail? as will probably get to sweden and/or norway. Hugely grateful for any opinions or insights!

heh summer i dont know if any of the boards have been to Denmark i know a few have been to Norway...although i do know that all of the Scandinavian countries are very expensive...

Oh! was stuck in copenhagen for about 6 hours. there's this really good pakistani resturant if you just walked toward the city center. oh, and a lot of sex shops right down the street. pretty fun day of walking around. but my roommate's been to denmark a couple times i'll get back to you when i talk to her about it

Oh why did ya have to mention all the sex shops, no wonder not many on here has travelled here!!!

Actually, Copenhagan is supposed to be a wonderful city, and the Danes an attractive, friendly people. Check out this article on Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel online:

It's about their public baths, but might give you some "atmosphere"...

I was in Denmark for a few days a whle back, its a really nice place. I stayed in this place called the sleep in. It was the cheapest place about i think but it was more like a school trip kinda place. just a big room with dividing walls everywhere and it was very noisey but if you arent that bothered about the facilities being great then its ok.
Places that I went to were
to see the litte mermaid, but u knew about that probably
there was this cool swimming place in the harbour called islands brygge
a part of the city called christiania, its kind of commune type place
an area called nyhavn which is quite posh
going up the rundetaarn is worth a look. u can get a good view of the city from there

Apart from the Little Mermaid I can only agree...Especially Christinia is beautiful and has a great vibe.
Islands Brygge is becoming more used now, so prepare for LOADS of people there in the summertime...
Rundetårn is an old round tower, beautiful and good if you want to see the view and some architechture - located on the shopping streets in the inner city.
Nyhavn is posh and nice in the summer, also FULL of people when the sun's out but expensive beers...

I've only passed through Copenhagen once, spent a night there in January a few years' back. I stayed in a beautiful hotel near the train station (traveling on someone else's dime that time), so can't help with hostels. I just wandered around the city centre for a few hours, down past the Tivoli Gardens (which are closed in January) and admired the architecture there, as well as the posters outside the gates.

It is more expensive than most of Western Europe, but people were very friendly, and it's seems a very easy city to get around. Our old landlord is from Elsinore, and has started up a b&b there. He said he would be charging hostel prices, but we haven't checked it out yet so I can't verify.

I found this website, www.bedandbreakfasteuropa.com which lists tons of places in Denmark, as well as anywhere else you might happen to go - B&Bs might be a good option outside the main cities. Also, check out www.bbdk.dk and www.dvl.dk , the latter has information on campsites for hikers, as well as walking routes.

I must indeed warn you that Denmark IS extremely expensive to live/stay in...but well worth visiting if you fancy having a laugh. I think there are some new, relatively cheap hostels in central Copenhagen if that's where you're going?
Prepare for people on the bus/train to not approach you, they'll probably give you a weird look if you smile at them but it works and they CAN crack a smile. We Danes are very humoristic ones, but unfortunately tend to put on a slighty shy facade in general life. But go visit a park and have a beer in the summertime and they'll all warm up

Do NOT go see the Little Mermaid...you'll be immensely dissapointed as it is a tiny boring statue surrounded by flocks of eager Japanese tourists. It's in no way a landmark and waste of time if you ask me...
I think it sometimes is better to book train tickets for Sweden online when you're in Denmark. It seems the Danish rail system demands more than the Swedish railway sites, but check that out. Göteborg and Malmö in Sweden are beautiful places by the way...

Apart from that I can tell you that spring has only just arrived so lucky you - it's nice and warm here and we're all hoping it lasts a bit after a insanely cold winter.

Hmm, I'll probably get many more specific ideas later, will post some later. Hope this was a tiny bit helpful yet not very specific(sorry)

Oh, and the public transport here in Copenhagen is very expensive. If you want to, you can use the city bikes. They are a bit heavy BUT....they only "cost" a deposit of 20 kr. which you insert in the handlebar and get back when you leave the bike in a city bike stand to lock it...20 kr. is about $3.

Also, many of the museums have expensive entry fees - BUT on Wednesdays most of them are free - so if you can , take advantage of that!

Thanks so much for all the helpful info, copenhagen sounds like a great place & i cant wait to see the rest of denmark, even if i do end up returning home broke with credit card debt!

And have a great, great trip - naaaah, I'm sure you'll get along on an ok budget. Just use the city bikes (taxis are expensive) and shop for food and stuff at Netto - one of the cheapest and best supermarkets here.

Also, I rode by a Hostel in the inner city called Danhostel I think, by the canals - maybe worth checking?
