Venice v. Florence v. Venice/Florence - TravelPUNK Backpacker College Student Budget Travel Message Boards!

Given two to three nights in Italy, would you split the time between Venice and Florence or choose just one? I'm inclined to go with three days in Florence, from what friends have told me, but I've never been to either place so I thought I'd ask.

Depends.

If you are a guy there is no way yo ucna spend more than one day in Venice. Its a must see city, but its 100% tourists and shops. If you spend a day there you will be able to walk everywhere you want to go, spend as much or as little as you would like and see every major site. Its an awesome city but the only thing there to do is walk and shop. The city is one of kind with its unigue canals, building lay out and tiny streets/walk ways. There are ANY cars in the city of venice or roads. Just some that lead to it. THe entire city is laced with canals and boats. Its just a wonderful palce to visit.

Because the only thing there to do for an extended amount of time is shop, girls love it. THe markets are amazing.

I would advice spending a day in Venice and spending the next two in Florence.

If i was in speed travel mode i would get the night train to Venice, spend the whole day walking around in awe, then get the night train to Florence. Venice is a place you really shouldn't miss.

As the first girl to reply, may I point out that there are also plenty of museums to visit, with absolutely stunning works of art, as well. The architecture is amazing, and the changing light is mind-boggling if you're into photography. You could spend three days there, taking vaporetto rides, checking out the museums and wonderful back streets and NEVER shop. I didn't. However, one day is enough for a flavour, and if I hadn't already been to Venice, I'd follow LFB's suggestion.

Yeah Tadpole, seriously! Believe it or not some women do NOT wish to spend heaps of money on a tonne of the same over-priced stuff (aka masks and glass). I'd go with LFB's plan. I was in Venice for one full day (didnt sleep there) and it was the perfect amount of time. You see the sights, feel the vibe then leave on a high note. (and there's even a little time in there to see a museum or 2)

There are museums and attractions, such as that big tower in St Mark's Square and the big cathedral, but they are so expensive to get into. The museums dont really have anything that you cant see in pretty much any other museum over there anyway. I also recommend going for one night, or just for the day if you cant find accomodation. You have to go though, I mean, its Venice

Good decision. With only three days to work with, speed travel is probably your best bet.

SOme indeed but would you not agree woman enjoy shopping more than guys? In a town where shopping is one of the major events, i was merely saying girls could spend more time there.

that is the stereotype, yes.

I agree with Tumble though, I don't really think that Venice is a shopping town. It's more of a vibe place where you go just to experience the beautiful city and the wonderful atmosphere it has to offer.

I guess my point was that I didn't see shopping as one of the major attractions of Venice. I can shop at home.

I would recommend one day in Venice and two in Florence.

You can do Venice in one day, that is one full day where you get up early and take a late night train to Florence.

Fierenze for sure! If you feel compelled to see Venice, get in early and take the 12:00a.m. out to Florence.

Make sure you stay at campground Michael Angelo. I know it sounds cheesy but trust me, it was the best campground I stayed at last summer. It has a kickass bar and an amazing view of the city/valley. It's a nice little bus ride into town but def. worth it.
