I'll be rolling through Switzerland in mid July and think it would be really cool if I could ski the Alps.

I'll be backpacking so I have three questions.

1. Is there skiing in the summer?
2. Is it possible to not only rent equipment but gear but equipment too? (I don't want to lug around a pair of gloves for two months)
3. how much?

I'm loving these forums .. but I clearly need to be able to edit my posts. #2 is simply asking if you can rent gear and equipment.

I have no clue, but I will be in Switzerland in mid july as well. I beleive the last week of July I will be in Interlakn with u want to meet up. I'd be up for some Alps snowboarding if it is possible, and the cost isnt outrageous.

There's summer skiing in the alps...

Austria: Hintertux & Shcladming
France: Alpe d'Huez, Tignes, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens
Switzerland: Les Diblerets, Zermatt

Of those, I'd probably choose Zermatt because you have a view of the freakin' MATTERHORN as you hit the slopes there, and you can ski/ride over to Italy, which is pretty damn cool if you ask me.

Just keep in mind that summer skiing/riding is on glacial snow - that means harder pack, a distinct lack of powder, and harder falls!

lilchappy - my friend and I are going to be booking our tickets next week. From there i'll be able to get a better idea of the actual dates i'll be passing through that area.

If our weeks meet up, it'd be great to meet fellow tpunk's. Where are you from?

And the Zermatt sounds like a good location, i'll have to see if they have a website witih a bit more information.

I went summer skiing in France, Switzerland and Italy 3 summers ago and had a blast. Most of the hills are crowded with kids training for downhill and slalom etc and the snow isnt very good, but its still neat to ski in a short sleeve shirt. Although, in the Les Duex Alps (pardon my French... I cant spell French worth shit) it almost seemed like it was winter. It really depends on how high the mountain is and where it is. I've heard of it snowing in the mountains in the summer and making some nice powder. So yeah, dont expect it to be amazing, but its something every skiier, in my opinion, needs to experience.

Oh, as for your gear question. I'm 100% positive about renting skis/snowboards and boots. I have no idea about gloves, etc.
