I know lots of the big tourist cities such as rome and London are expensive, but really all you experienced travellers. How expensive is say london compared to smaller parts of england or say london compared to Switzerland. I keep hearing how Switzerland is very expensive but i'm just curious.

Never actually been in the city of London, but i had to wait 5 hours at heathrow airport for a connecting flight once. While i was there i bought a turkey sandwich and a coke and it cost me $14AUD. Here at home that would have cost me about $5.

Rome was one of the more cheaper places I went to....never been to Switzerland so I can't compare it to London....but what makes the UK so insanely expensive is the exchange rate on the pound.

Both I guess are expensive, but if you're working on a backpacker's budget, you can make both cities cheap. For example, London was the city I flew into when I traveled Europe, so I booked a hostel ahead of time. I paid 9 pounds/night, which was comparable to any other city. For food, I ate from grocery stores, again reasonably priced. I did, however, go wrong when it was raining, I was wanting something that reminded me of home, so I went to a Starbucks...$15 CDN later, I realized yeah, London's expensive!

ummmmm i think your friend was having you on, $36AUD is a bit hard to swallow. The Big Mac Index says that a big mac in Switzerland is $4.90USD (the most expensive in the world). The exchange rate is $1AUD = 0.96 Switzerland Franks.
