everyone goes to dam square. there are lots of fireworks everywhere so plan on ducking. afterward everyone goes to a bar or nightclub so have a plan on which one your going to goto. they fill up fast. watch out for drug dealers on the street the stuff they sell is usually fake ---like asprin,viagra,or sometimes rat poison. they dont care they will never see you again. also drug dealers look for drunk people and try to mug them. amsterdam is pretty safe except around the red light district which is still reasonably safe. either carry your passport with you or put it in a hotel safe. i had mine stolen in my hotel room. it will take all day to get a new one and cost over a $100.00. dont buy travelers checks.
use the atm you get a better rate and if you get a good rate use your credit card whenever you can. they have trams that will take you all over the city, or you can walk just anywhere in the city within a half hour. the pot they sell can be classified as powerful to ground flooring strong. its gonna be a damp cold there so dress warm. the bicycles have the right of way in any situation so dont get in there way or they will run you over, and you might have to buy them a new tire.
