I went right by Lyon at approximately 200 mph on the TGV once.
haha, sorry. I don't have any advice but I've heard it's a very nice city to visit. And it has a reputation for being THE hotbed of fantastic restaurants in France right now.

My coworker's family lives in Lyon, so I asked him earlier tonight about the lowdown... He said it's boring and that you should go to Toulouse. Then again, this guy's nuts. We partied on NYE in Paris and the trains had stopped running. Instead of crashing at the hostel with me, he walked back 20km to his brother's house.. in the snow. So, umm, yeah, he's not the most rational guy in the world!

Hmm...haven't been to Lyon myself. It's not TOO far from Provence, I see. Tons of cool stuff to down there...hillside towns, Roman ruins, castles -- you name it.
Lyon, though, I don't know. Grab a guidebook from the library, I'd say, and see if anything strikes your fancy.
Look forward to seeing pics of your trip!
